Description

Château Lafite-Rothschild 2023 is a refined Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé, combining the estate’s celebrated elegance with remarkable precision and freshness. One of Bordeaux’s most iconic wines, it comes from a property whose status was confirmed in the 1855 Classification, placing Lafite among the region’s five First Growths.

Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage opens with an elegant bouquet of raspberries and redcurrants, layered with subtle white pepper, Provençal herbs and delicate spices. With time in the glass, the wine reveals further dimensions of mineral character, finesse and complexity. On the palate, the entry is precise and graceful, supported by silky tannins and a beautifully refined structure. Fresh, gently bitter nuances and vibrant tension carry through to an exceptionally long finish. This is a polished, classically styled Lafite with the concentration and balance to develop magnificently over many years. Although approachable with extended aeration, it will benefit from cellaring and should gain depth, aromatic complexity and additional silkiness over the next two to three decades, provided it is stored under suitable conditions.

Production
The estate encompasses approximately 112 hectares of vineyards, including around 50 hectares on the historic Plateau des Carruades. Its gravel-rich Pauillac terroir, underpinned by clay and limestone, offers excellent drainage while helping the vines retain freshness and structure. Following meticulous parcel selection, grapes are vinified separately according to their origin and ripeness in wooden, concrete and stainless-steel tanks. Controlled-temperature fermentation and regular remontage allow for a gentle extraction of colour, aroma and tannin, while maceration lasts approximately 22 days on average. After malolactic fermentation, the individual lots are matured separately in French oak sourced from Lafite’s own cooperage. Only the finest barrels are selected for the Grand Vin, which then undergoes a further approximately 15 months of ageing, predominantly in new French oak, before blending and release.

Food & Serving
A wine of this stature is ideally paired with richly flavoured yet refined dishes such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast or beef Wellington. It also complements truffle-seasoned dishes, wild mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. The 2023 is still youthful, so decanting for two to three hours is recommended when enjoying it now; older bottles should be decanted more gently and primarily to remove any sediment.

Producer
Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates and a benchmark for the Pauillac appellation. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the château is part of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and draws on centuries of winemaking experience. Its meticulous parcel selection, dedicated winery and in-house Tonnellerie des Domaines contribute to a distinctive style defined by elegance, precision and longevity. Across generations, Lafite has remained one of the world’s most sought-after and collectible wines.
