Château Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac 1 2023

Château Lafite-Rothschild 2023 is a refined Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé, combining the estate’s legendary elegance with remarkable precision and freshness. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, Lafite has long been regarded as one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious and sought-after wines.

Tasting Notes
The 2023 vintage opens with a graceful bouquet of raspberry, redcurrant and subtle white pepper, gradually revealing nuances of Provençal herbs, spice and mineral character. Its aromatic profile is poised and complex, with the finesse and restraint traditionally associated with Lafite. On the palate, the attack is precise and elegant, supported by silky tannins and a beautifully refined structure. Fresh bitter notes and a lively sense of tension carry through to an exceptionally long finish. This is a vintage with both immediate charm and considerable aging potential; it should develop added layers of complexity over the next two decades and beyond when properly cellared.

Production
The estate encompasses approximately 112 hectares of vineyards, including around 50 hectares on the historic Plateau des Carruades. Following meticulous parcel selection, the grapes are fermented separately according to their origin and degree of ripeness in wood, concrete and stainless-steel tanks. Controlled-temperature fermentation and regular pump-overs encourage gentle extraction, while maceration lasts approximately 22 days on average. After malolactic fermentation, each lot is matured separately in French oak barrels produced by Lafite’s own cooperage, the Tonnellerie des Domaines. Only the finest barrels are selected for the Grand Vin, which is then aged for approximately 15 months, predominantly in new French oak.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the wine to come gradually to temperature. Its structure and freshness make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck, and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses. Decant for around two hours when enjoying it young; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly, primarily to separate the wine from any sediment.
