Château La Nerthe, Châteauneuf du Pape 2022

Château La Nerthe’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022 is a classic Southern Rhône red shaped by one of the appellation’s most recognisable terroirs. Produced from traditionally cultivated vines and made entirely from organically certified vineyards, it combines the warmth and generosity of the vintage with the structure and complexity expected from one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s historic estates. The château has been associated with the Richard family for decades and remains an important name in the region.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, vivid ruby-red colour. On the nose, it offers an expressive blend of ripe dark berries, red fruit and Provençal spice, with underlying notes of herbs, earth and subtle oak. The palate is full-bodied and rounded, balancing generous fruit with supple tannins, warming spice and a savoury finish. Its structure and concentration allow it to develop further in bottle over the coming years, while its fruit-forward character makes it enjoyable already with suitable decanting.

Production
Château La Nerthe’s vineyards are marked by the famous rounded stones, or galets roulés, that retain heat during the day and release it gradually at night. The old vines are traditionally trained in gobelet form and include the grape varieties permitted within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before vinification. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in oak, followed by 12 months of maturation in large wooden vessels and a further six months before bottling.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for hearty dishes such as roasted or braised beef, lamb, game and slow-cooked stews. It also works well with Provençal cuisine, grilled vegetables, wild mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 30–60 minutes when enjoying the wine young, particularly alongside a rich meal; older bottles should be decanted carefully and briefly if needed.

Producer
Château La Nerthe is surrounded by vineyards, centuries-old olive trees and oak trees associated with the truffle-rich landscape of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate has long been owned by the Richard family, whose business began in the 1930s as a blending and bottling company serving Paris’s restaurant trade. The family acquired its first Southern Rhône estate in 1950 and today owns more than 600 hectares across Côtes du Rhône, Beaujolais and Bordeaux. Château La Nerthe’s entire production is now organically certified, reflecting its commitment to the natural character of the region.
