Château La Haye, Saint Estèphe CB 2023

Château La Haye Saint-Estèphe 2023 is a richly styled Bordeaux red from one of the appellation’s historic estates, offering generous dark-fruit character, floral lift and polished oak spice. With a history dating back nearly four and a half centuries and a vineyard that has always remained closely associated with the château, it is a distinctive expression of Saint-Estèphe tradition.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, the wine shows impressive colour and concentration. The bouquet is inviting and expressive, combining aromas of blackcurrant with floral notes, warm spices and a touch of vanilla from its oak maturation. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet harmonious, with a supple texture and well-integrated structure. Dark-fruit flavours are complemented by gentle spice and a smooth, lingering finish. The 2023 can be enjoyed young for its approachable fruit and softness, while its structure should allow it to develop further over the next several years, particularly through the late 2020s and into the early 2030s.

Production
The 11.05-hectare estate lies in Saint-Estèphe, an appellation known for producing structured, age-worthy reds. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks over three to four weeks at controlled temperatures, allowing for careful extraction of colour, aroma and flavour. The wine is then matured for 12–14 months in oak barrels, 25–40% of which are new, adding vanilla and spice while preserving the character of the fruit.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roasted or grilled beef, lamb, venison and hearty dishes such as beef stew or duck with a rich sauce. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended when drinking it young, both to open the aromas and to soften its structure; older bottles should be decanted carefully to separate any sediment.

Producer
Château La Haye has roots reaching back to 30 April 1557, when a purchase agreement between Jeanne Bernard and Janot Bernard de Leyssac marked the foundation of the estate. Until the French Revolution, it was one of three noble houses in the parish of Saint-Estèphe, alongside Calon and Pez. The name La Haye became associated with the property around the mid-19th century, and the château had already taken its present architectural form by 1870. Its winemaking facilities and cellars were completely rebuilt in 1990, and the estate was acquired by Chris Cardon in 2012. Today, Château La Haye continues to represent the long-standing heritage of Saint-Estèphe.
