Description

Château La Gaffelière Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé 2019 is a poised and polished expression of one of Bordeaux’s most historic estates. Blending Merlot and Cabernet Franc from prime limestone terroir, it delivers depth, precision, and effortless elegance in the glass. This 2019 vintage stands out for its purity of fruit and finely etched structure, capturing the classic Saint-Émilion character in a modern, refined style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 La Gaffelière shows a deep, vibrant garnet-purple color with an almost opaque core, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is beautifully layered: ripe black cherries, blackberries, and plum compote are lifted by notes of violets, graphite, and crushed stone, with subtle nuances of cedar, sweet spices, and a touch of cocoa and tobacco leaf emerging with air. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with a silky, finely woven texture and a striking sense of freshness. The Merlot brings succulent dark fruit and roundness, while the Cabernet Franc adds tension, florality, and a precise, mineral spine. Polished tannins frame flavors of blackcurrant, cherry, licorice, and subtle mocha, leading into a long, saline and perfumed finish. Still youthful and structured, this 2019 has excellent aging potential and should evolve beautifully over 15–20 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.

Production
Château La Gaffelière is situated on the coveted limestone slopes just south of the village of Saint-Émilion, a terroir renowned for producing wines of finesse and remarkable longevity. The estate’s vineyards are planted predominantly to Merlot and Cabernet Franc on a mix of chalky limestone and clay-limestone soils that naturally limit vigor and enhance concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, with rigorous sorting to ensure only optimal fruit is retained. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve elegance rather than power, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new) to integrate tannins and add subtle complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Saint-Émilion 1er Grand Cru Classé is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with morel mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, game birds, mushroom-based risottos, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. If opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to unfold and soften; with more bottle age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant will help separate any sediment and bring out the wine’s more subtle, tertiary notes.

Producer
Château La Gaffelière is one of Saint-Émilion’s oldest and most respected estates, with roots dating back to Roman times and a continuous family ownership that spans several centuries. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé, it occupies a privileged position on the famous limestone plateau and côtes, alongside some of the most illustrious names in Bordeaux. Under the stewardship of the Malet-Roquefort family, the château has steadily refined its viticulture and winemaking, embracing precision and parcel-based approaches while remaining faithful to its classic style. Regarded as a benchmark for elegance and terroir expression in Saint-Émilion, La Gaffelière consistently earns high critical acclaim and is widely recognized for producing wines that combine immediate charm with outstanding capacity to age.
