Description
Château La Dournie Sous le Figuier 2022 is a generous Saint-Chinian red made from equal parts Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre. Grown organically on schist soils and aged for 12 months without oak, it preserves the clarity of its ripe fruit while expressing the character of southern France. Its name, meaning “under the fig tree”, reflects the relaxed, convivial spirit of this six-generation family estate.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, inviting ruby colour. On the nose, savoury tapenade and warm nutmeg complement ripe black cherry aromas, creating a layered Mediterranean profile.
On the palate, it is generous and velvety, with flavours of mature berries and plums followed by a subtle cooling note of menthol. The balanced, fruit-led style is approachable now and should develop further over the next few years, while retaining its ripe, expressive character.
Production
The grapes come from organically farmed schist soils in the Saint-Chinian appellation, where the mineral-rich slopes help give the wine freshness and definition. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are blended in equal proportions, then the wine is matured for 12 months without ageing in wood. This simple, non-oak approach allows the fruit and the natural character of the terroir to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, at around 16–18°C. Sous le Figuier pairs well with grilled lamb, beef, duck, roasted vegetables, ratatouille and hearty Mediterranean dishes, as well as mature cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a short 20–30 minute decant can help open the wine’s savoury aromas and velvety fruit.
Producer
Château La Dournie is a 45-hectare family estate in Saint-Chinian that has been passed down through six generations and is now managed by Véronique Etienne. The vineyard forms one continuous site with 14 grape varieties, including 20 hectares of schist-covered slopes dedicated to AOC Saint-Chinian reds and rosés. Guided by organic principles and a philosophy of nature and simplicity, the estate reflects the strong cultural identity and relaxed art of living associated with the Languedoc.
