Description
Château La Couspaude is a refined Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé from the acclaimed 2016 vintage. Produced from the limestone-rich vineyards surrounding Saint-Émilion, it combines the richness of Merlot with the aromatic lift and structure of Cabernet Franc. The estate has been part of Saint-Émilion’s historic Grand Cru Classé classification since its creation in 1955.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour with garnet reflections, this 2016 Bordeaux offers an expressive nose of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plums, complemented by violet, cedar, spice and subtle tobacco. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet balanced, with generous dark fruit, polished tannins and a fresh mineral character typical of Saint-Émilion’s limestone soils.
The finish is long and refined, revealing notes of cocoa, vanilla and savoury spice as the wine opens. With its combination of concentration, freshness and structure, Château La Couspaude 2016 is drinking beautifully now, while careful cellaring can reward it with further complexity over the next decade or more.
Production
The estate’s vineyards benefit from the renowned limestone plateau and clay-limestone soils of Saint-Émilion, which provide both richness and natural freshness. Grapes are carefully selected and harvested at maturity before being vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled vessels. The wine is then matured in oak, allowing the fruit, tannins and subtle toasted nuances to integrate harmoniously.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the wine to breathe for 30–60 minutes. Decanting is recommended, particularly for younger servings, to soften the tannins and release its aromatic depth. It pairs especially well with roast lamb, beef fillet, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château La Couspaude is a historic Saint-Émilion estate associated with the Aubert family, which has been involved with the property since the early 20th century. Its privileged position on Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau and its Grand Cru Classé status make it one of the appellation’s notable traditional producers. The estate is recognised for wines that combine generous fruit and supple richness with the structure and mineral freshness characteristic of the region.
