Description
Château La Clotte Saint-Émilion 2017 is a refined Bordeaux red from a historic estate classified as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé. Produced in a small, prestigious vineyard on the limestone plateau near Château Pavie, it combines the generous character of Merlot with the structure and aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with purple highlights. Its nose opens with aromas of ripe black plum, blackberry and cherry, complemented by violet, subtle spice and hints of cedar. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a balanced, persistent finish. The 2017 vintage offers appealing accessibility, while its structure allows it to develop further in bottle over the next several years—particularly through around 2030 and beyond under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Château La Clotte benefits from Saint-Émilion’s limestone and clay soils, which help provide both richness and mineral freshness. The estate’s relatively small vineyard is planted primarily with Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are carefully selected at harvest, then vinified with a focus on preserving the purity of the fruit and the character of the site, followed by maturation in oak to add depth and refinement without overwhelming the wine’s natural balance.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to breathe. Decanting for approximately 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its ripe fruit and polished structure pair beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, venison, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château La Clotte is a historic Saint-Émilion estate situated close to some of the appellation’s most celebrated properties. The château is associated with the Vauthier family, whose long-standing presence in Saint-Émilion includes stewardship of several important Right Bank estates. Its Grand Cru Classé status reflects the estate’s recognised position within the region, while its small scale and limestone terroir contribute to wines with both elegance and distinctive site character.
