Château Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan 1 2023

Château Haut-Brion 2023 is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious red wines, produced at the historic estate in Pessac, just south of the city of Bordeaux. Celebrated as one of the original First Growths of the 1855 Classification, it combines the depth of classic Bordeaux with a distinctive gravelly, mineral character and remarkable refinement.

Tasting Notes
The wine presents a deep, youthful ruby colour. Its bouquet opens with expressive notes of blackcurrant, graphite and subtle smoke, with the mineral character associated with Haut-Brion adding depth and complexity. On the palate, it is layered and composed, balancing ripe tannins with fresh acidity. A long, mineral finish carries the wine with impressive persistence. The 2023 vintage has the structure and concentration to develop beautifully in bottle. While approachable with careful decanting, it should gain greater complexity and harmony over the next 10–20 years, with further ageing potential for well-cellared bottles.

Production
The estate is located in Pessac-Léognan, where deep gravel soils and the area’s distinctive urban-influenced microclimate contribute to the wine’s concentration, freshness and mineral profile. Each grape variety is fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and concrete vats, allowing the individual lots to be handled with precision before blending and maturation in French oak barrels.

Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Bordeaux is an excellent match for beef, rack of lamb and game, particularly when prepared in a classic style with restrained sauces that do not overwhelm the wine’s nuanced aromatics. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when drinking young to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; mature bottles should be handled more gently and may need only a short period in the decanter.
