Description
Château Haut-Brion 2021 is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious red wines, produced at the region’s oldest continuously operating grand cru estate. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé of the 1855 Classification and the only such estate from outside the Médoc, Haut-Brion is celebrated for its remarkable elegance, aromatic complexity and ability to develop over many decades.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, the 2021 vintage opens with refined aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, cedar, tobacco leaf and subtle smoky mineral notes. On the palate, it is poised and precise, combining concentrated dark fruit with fresh acidity, finely grained tannins and the distinctive savoury, earthy character associated with Haut-Brion. The finish is long, layered and persistent, with hints of spice and graphite emerging over time.
The 2021 vintage favours freshness, balance and finesse rather than sheer power. With careful cellaring, this wine should gain further complexity and harmony over the next several decades, while its structure makes it rewarding to revisit as it matures.
Production
The vineyards lie on the distinctive gravelly soils of Pessac-Léognan, where deep Günzian gravel provides excellent drainage and encourages the vines to develop concentrated, expressive fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation, with the varieties and parcels vinified separately to preserve their individual character. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing its fruit, structure and mineral complexity to integrate gradually.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gently to temperature. A young bottle will benefit from decanting for around two hours, while older bottles should be handled carefully and decanted only shortly before serving, if at all. Its refined structure pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Haut-Brion has roots dating back to the 16th century and is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s foundational wine estates. Located in Pessac, just south of the city of Bordeaux, it has played a defining role in establishing the reputation of the Graves and Pessac-Léognan appellations. Its inclusion among Bordeaux’s First Growths in the 1855 Classification, despite being the sole estate from outside the Médoc, reflects its exceptional historical and qualitative standing.
