Description
Château Gruaud Larose 2015 is a classic Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé that combines pedigree, precision, and serious aging potential. From one of Bordeaux’s most historic estates, this vintage shows the depth and structure that have made Gruaud Larose a benchmark for long-lived, collector-worthy wine.
Tasting Notes
The 2015 vintage opens with a medium garnet-purple hue and a beautifully expressive bouquet of bright red cherries, ripe raspberries, and fresh blackcurrants. Layered beneath are notes of cinnamon stick, rose petals, fallen leaves, and dried Provençal herbs, giving the wine a distinctly refined and aromatic character.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with tightly woven red and black fruit, spicy accents, and a firm, grainy frame. There is impressive freshness and lift throughout, finishing long, perfumed, and poised. While approachable with patience, this is a wine built to evolve gracefully over the next decade or more.
Production
Château Gruaud Larose sits in the southern part of Saint-Julien on south-facing gravelly plateau vineyards, an ideal terroir for Cabernet-driven Bordeaux. The vines are mature, averaging more than 46 years of age, with the oldest over 80 years old, contributing concentration and complexity to the final blend.
The 2015 is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc, and was matured for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, 80% of which were new and 20% one to two years old.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roasted lamb, beef fillet, duck breast, game, or rich mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16-18°C and consider decanting for at least 1-2 hours if opening young, to allow the wine’s structure and aromatics to fully unfold.
Producer
Founded in 1725, Château Gruaud Larose is one of Saint-Julien’s most historic estates and holds the status of 2ème Cru Classé from the 1855 Bordeaux classification. The property has passed through four notable family lineages over the centuries and is now owned by Jacques Merlaut and the Taillan Group, which also oversees several respected Bordeaux châteaux. Known for its longevity and investment appeal, the estate has also been moving toward organic farming practices since 2019, while incorporating biodynamic techniques in the vineyard.
