Description

Château Fonroque Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2020 is a refined, organically and biodynamically farmed Bordeaux that captures the striking contrasts of this remarkable vintage. Crafted from 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc, it balances generous ripe fruit with lifted freshness and finely woven tannins. As one of the benchmark estates for thoughtful, terroir-driven winemaking in Saint-Émilion, Fonroque delivers a wine here that is both immediately seductive and clearly built to age.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Fonroque presents an intense, almost purple hue, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is very pure and nuanced, opening with aromas of freshly ground coffee and cocoa, followed by violet and floral notes, dark cherries, blackberries and a subtle hint of spice from its time in oak. On the palate, the wine is expressive yet composed, with a beautiful energy and great precision. The fruit is crisp and juicy – think ripe plum, black cherry and blueberry – wrapped in velvety, supple tannins that give a silky, delicate mouthfeel rather than sheer power. There is a tight, focused backbone that carries the flavours through to a long, exact finish, where freshness and minerality linger. Still youthful, this is a fresh, poised Saint-Émilion that will reward cellaring over the next 10–15 years, gaining in complexity, softness and aromatic depth with time.

Production
Château Fonroque’s 22 hectares of vineyards sit on the limestone and clay-limestone plateau and slopes of Saint-Émilion, a terroir famed for producing Merlot- and Cabernet Franc-based wines with both structure and finesse. 2020 was a vintage of contrasts: a very wet winter, a warm and humid (almost tropical) spring encouraging early and uneven flowering, followed by a long, very dry and warm stretch from early summer, punctuated by much-needed storms in mid-August. These conditions led to naturally low yields and grapes of excellent ripeness harvested relatively early. Certified organic since 2006 and biodynamic since 2008, Fonroque is farmed with cover crops, grasses and flowers between the rows to promote biodiversity, regulate water uptake and preserve soil life. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with careful sorting first on a vibrating table and then by hand in the cellar before the grapes go into temperature-controlled cement tanks for fermentation. The 2020 blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc was then aged in oak barrels, with around 30% new oak, the remainder in used barrels and a portion in inert vessels, to preserve fruit purity and refine the tannins without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a versatile partner for refined dishes based on red meat, game and earthy flavours. Try it with roast lamb studded with garlic and rosemary, entrecôte with a red wine jus, duck breast, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also works beautifully with mushroom risotto, truffle pasta, and hard or semi-hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Tomme de Savoie. Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glasses to let the bouquet fully unfold. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps open the aromatics and soften the structure; as it gains bottle age, a gentle shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Château Fonroque is one of Saint-Émilion’s historic Grand Cru Classé estates and a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux. Owned and guided for many years by Alain Moueix, the property has been certified organic since 2006 and biodynamic since 2008, placing it among the early leaders of more natural, terroir-focused farming on the Right Bank. Today, all 22 hectares are classified as Grand Cru Classé, planted predominantly to Merlot (about 88%) with the balance in Cabernet Franc. In the vineyards, grasses and flowers flourish between the rows, encouraging biodiversity and helping manage water stress, while in the cellar, gentle handling, careful selection and a balanced use of new and used oak aim to preserve purity rather than create massive, showy wines. Alain Moueix’s stated goal is to craft wines that express harmony and balance rather than sheer power, a philosophy that has earned Château Fonroque a reputation for elegant, long-lived Saint-Émilion with real character and authenticity.
