Description
Château Ferrière Margaux 2020 Bio is a poised and polished expression of one of the smallest yet most historic Third Growth estates of the 1855 classification. Farmed biodynamically and crafted with a light, precise touch, this Margaux marries classical Left Bank structure with remarkable purity of fruit. The warm 2020 vintage delivered perfectly ripe grapes, giving a wine that is both concentrated and refined, true to the hallmark elegance of Margaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Château Ferrière Margaux shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with a youthful purple rim, signaling intensity and energy. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: blackcurrant and ripe blackberry intertwine with notes of wild plum, violet, and graphite, supported by hints of cedar, cigar box, pencil shavings, and a touch of warm spice. Subtle floral tones and a faint scent of crushed stones underline its Margaux finesse.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a finely knit structure and refreshing acidity. The dominant Cabernet Sauvignon brings firm yet polished tannins and classic cassis and black cherry flavors, while Merlot adds flesh, dark plum, and a supple mid-palate. Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc contribute a delicate savory edge—hints of pepper, dried herbs, and floral lift. The finish is long, precise, and slightly saline, with lingering notes of dark fruit, cocoa, and tobacco. Still youthful, the 2020 has excellent aging potential; it should begin to drink beautifully after 5–7 years in bottle and continue to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years, gaining complexity and silkier texture over time.
Production
Château Ferrière’s 24 hectares of vines are planted in the heart of Margaux on classic Left Bank terroir: deep gravel soils over limestone and clay, providing excellent drainage and encouraging deep root systems. The estate is farmed according to biodynamic principles, favoring biodiversity, low inputs, and meticulous manual work in the vineyard to ensure healthy, balanced fruit. The 2020 blend is dominated by approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by around 30% Merlot and small percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Harvest took place relatively early due to the warm growing season, with grapes picked at full physiological ripeness. Fermentation occurred in large stainless-steel tanks, allowing precise temperature control and a gentle extraction of color and tannin. The wine was then aged for 18 months, with about 80% maturing in traditional barriques—roughly half of those new—and the remaining 20% in amphorae, a choice that preserves fruit purity and texture while moderating the influence of oak.
Food & Serving
This Margaux pairs beautifully with refined yet flavorful dishes such as roast lamb with thyme and garlic, beef tenderloin, slow-braised short ribs, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, or aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and structural balance. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfurl; as it matures, a shorter decant of about 30 minutes is typically sufficient to remove sediment and awaken the aromas.
Producer
Château Ferrière is one of the historic classified growths of the Médoc, ranked as a 3ème Grand Cru Classé in the legendary 1855 classification. Situated in the Margaux appellation on the Left Bank of the Gironde, the estate is comparatively small in size, which allows for great attention to detail from vineyard to bottle. In recent decades, Château Ferrière has become known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, positioning it at the forefront of environmentally conscious fine wine production in Bordeaux. This philosophy has sharpened the clarity, precision, and terroir expression in the wines, earning Ferrière growing recognition among critics and enthusiasts as a source of classically styled, elegant Margaux with a modern, sustainable approach.
