Description

Château Faugères 2018 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a powerful yet polished Right Bank Bordeaux that captures the richness of this outstanding vintage. Crafted mainly from Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure and lift, it offers generous, modern fruit wrapped in classic Saint-Émilion elegance. As a classified Grand Cru Classé estate with prime limestone and clay vineyards, Château Faugères has become one of the appellation’s most sought-after names.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Château Faugères shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe black plum, blackberry compote and black cherry, interwoven with notes of violets, graphite, cocoa, sweet spice, and a touch of cedar and toasted oak. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, velvety Bordeaux with plush, ripe fruit supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, mineral backbone from its limestone terroir. Flavours of dark berries, cassis and plum mingle with hints of mocha, licorice, baking spices and a subtle savoury note. The oak is well-judged, adding texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit and a refined, chalky minerality. While already approachable with some aeration, the 2018 has the structure and balance to develop beautifully over the next 10–15 years, gaining further nuance and tertiary complexity.

Production
Château Faugères is situated on some of the finest terroirs of Saint-Émilion, with vineyards spread across limestone plateaus and clay-limestone slopes overlooking the Dordogne valley. These soils naturally restrict yields and impart both concentration and a signature mineral freshness to the wines. The estate, encompassing around 37 hectares, is planted predominantly with Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to allow meticulous selection. In the winery—an architecturally striking, gravity-fed facility—vinification combines modern precision with traditional Bordeaux know-how: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentation, and careful plotting of each vineyard block. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (a proportion new each year) to refine the tannins, build complexity, and integrate the toast and spice notes that complement the natural richness of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a versatile partner for richly flavoured dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef ribeye, duck breast, and slow-cooked dishes such as braised short ribs or beef bourguignon. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its fruit and structure. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and soften the tannins; as it matures, a shorter decant will generally suffice to remove any sediment and awaken the aromatics.

Producer
Château Faugères has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few decades. The estate was inherited in 1987 by Pierre-Bernard Guisez, who, together with his wife Corinne, set out to lift the property from supplying a single local merchant to competing among the very best châteaux of Saint-Émilion. A major new chapter began in 2005, when entrepreneur, perfume designer and passionate wine lover Silvio Denz acquired the estate. Investing heavily in both vineyard management and a state-of-the-art, gravity-fed winery, he focused on exploiting the full potential of Faugères’ exceptional limestone and clay-limestone terroirs. Today, with 37 hectares of prime vines and recognition as a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé, Château Faugères is regarded as a benchmark modern estate in the region, consistently praised by critics for its combination of depth, precision and a clear expression of its great terroir.
