Description

Château Falfas Côtes de Bourg Bordeaux Bio 2017 is a characterful, certified organic red from one of the standout estates on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Blending Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Malbec, it delivers classic Bordeaux structure wrapped in generous, dark-fruited charm. Sitting on the slopes above the Gironde estuary, Château Falfas has long been a reference for naturally farmed, terroir-driven wines from Côtes de Bourg.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Château Falfas shows a deep ruby color with violet reflections, hinting at its youth and concentration. The nose opens with an inviting mix of blackcurrant, blackberry and elderberry, layered with notes of graphite, cracked black pepper, tobacco leaf and a subtle roasted coffee nuance from its time in oak. On the palate, the Merlot takes the lead with plush, ripe dark fruit, giving a sense of richness without heaviness. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon bring structure and lift, adding freshness, spice and a gently herbal edge, while Malbec contributes a touch of wild berry and depth. The tannins are firm yet finely grained, providing a pleasantly tactile grip that frames the fruit rather than overwhelming it. A lively, well-integrated acidity keeps everything in balance and leads to a long, savory finish marked by hints of cocoa and sweet spice. Enjoyable now with a brief decant, this 2017 has the stuffing to evolve gracefully for another 5–8 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Falfas lies in Côtes de Bourg on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, with vineyards overlooking the Gironde estuary where clay-limestone and gravelly soils give both power and finesse to the wines. The estate is farmed organically (Bio), with a strong emphasis on soil health, biodiversity and low yields to concentrate flavor in the grapes. Harvest is typically carried out by hand, allowing for a careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the different varieties—Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec—are vinified separately in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity and manage extraction gently. After fermentation, the wine is matured in oak barrels (a portion new, the rest seasoned) for refinement, integration of tannins and subtle spice complexity before blending and bottling at the estate.

Food & Serving
This Côtes de Bourg is a natural partner for classic French bistro cooking and hearty, flavorful dishes. Think roast lamb with herbs, grilled entrecôte, duck breast, or braised beef with root vegetables; it also shines alongside mushroom-based dishes, lentil stews and aged cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both the aromatic complexity and the structure. A decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to let the fruit open and to soften the tannins, especially if you’re enjoying it before its full maturity window.

Producer
Château Falfas is one of the historic and pioneering estates of Côtes de Bourg, with a winemaking heritage that stretches back centuries on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Under modern stewardship, it has become widely respected for its early and consistent commitment to organic and biodynamic practices, well before they became fashionable in the region. This focus on sustainable viticulture and careful, low-intervention winemaking has positioned Château Falfas as a benchmark producer for serious, ageworthy wines from Côtes de Bourg—wines that often deliver a level of quality and character surpassing their appellation status and offering outstanding value for Bordeaux lovers.
