Description
Chateau d’Yquem Sauternes No. 2 is a rare, non-commercial special bottling created by the estate for trusted friends and valued members of the Yquem circle. Unlike the classic vintage Yquem, this cuvée is crafted from multiple harvests to deliver a more consistent style, with greater freshness and approachability while still reflecting the prestige of one of Sauternes’ most iconic names.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is expected to show the luminous golden hue associated with fine Sauternes. The bouquet should offer layered notes of candied citrus, ripe stone fruit, honey, saffron, and subtle botrytis complexity, while the palate balances richness with a lively freshness that keeps the wine elegant and digestible. Thanks to its blended multi-vintage style, it should feel immediately accessible, yet still possess the depth and structure for graceful development over time.
Rather than being defined by a single harvest, this bottling is designed for balance and continuity. The result is a wine that should combine sweetness, lift, and finesse in a way that makes it enjoyable both now and over the medium term, with the concentration and acidity to age well in bottle.
Production
Produced at Chateau d’Yquem in Sauternes, Bordeaux, this special release is made as a multi-vintage cuvée, combining several years to achieve a consistent house style. The concept differs from the estate’s classic vintage expression by smoothing out year-to-year variation and emphasizing harmony, freshness, and a more open profile. As with Yquem’s great sweet wines, the quality is rooted in the exceptional terroir of Sauternes and the meticulous selection and vinification that define the estate.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 8–10°C, to preserve freshness and showcase the wine’s aromatic detail. It is an excellent match for blue cheese, foie gras, fruit-based desserts, tarte Tatin, or simply enjoyed on its own as a contemplative aperitif or after-dinner wine. Decanting is generally not necessary, but a brief aeration may help if the bottle has been stored for a long time.
Producer
Chateau d’Yquem is the legendary benchmark estate of Sauternes and one of the most celebrated sweet-wine producers in the world. Now under the ownership of LVMH, the château has built its reputation on extraordinary precision, strict vineyard selection, and an uncompromising pursuit of quality, with a history that places it at the very top of Bordeaux’s noble sweet wine tradition.
