Description

Château d’Yquem is one of the world’s most celebrated dessert wines, prized for its extraordinary concentration, balance, and remarkable longevity. Made from carefully selected botrytised grapes, it stands as a benchmark for Sauternes and a true icon of Bordeaux history.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep golden to amber hue that hints at its richness and evolution. The nose is intensely aromatic, with layers of honey, dried apricot, candied citrus, saffron, vanilla, and subtle floral notes, often gaining complexity with age. On the palate, it is luxuriously sweet yet beautifully lifted by vibrant acidity, giving the wine freshness and precision rather than heaviness. Flavours of ripe stone fruit, orange marmalade, toasted almond, and spice unfold in a long, silky finish. Château d’Yquem has exceptional aging potential and can develop for decades, often a lifetime or more, revealing increasingly nuanced notes of caramel, truffle, dried fruit, and nuts over time.

Production
Château d’Yquem is produced in Sauternes, Bordeaux, where morning fog from the nearby river and warm afternoon sun create ideal conditions for noble rot, or botrytis cinerea. The wine is made exclusively from fully botrytised grapes, primarily Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc adding freshness and aromatic lift, and the harvest is carried out by multiple selective pickings to capture only perfectly concentrated berries. The extremely low yields—often no more than a single glass of wine per vine—contribute to its rarity and intensity.

Food & Serving
Serve Château d’Yquem lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C, to preserve its freshness and aromatic detail. It pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese, fruit tarts, crème brûlée, and desserts featuring stone fruit, citrus, or almond; it can also be an elegant match for spicy Asian cuisine or enjoyed on its own as a meditative finish to a meal. Decanting is generally not necessary, though older bottles may benefit from a gentle aeration shortly before serving.

Producer
Château d’Yquem is the legendary estate of Sauternes and the only property classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, a distinction that underscores its singular status. With a history dating back centuries, the estate has become synonymous with the finest noble-rot wines in the world and has earned an international reputation for consistency, longevity, and excellence. Its wines are among the most sought-after dessert wines ever produced.
