Description
Château Durfort Vivens Margaux 2020 is a poised, classically structured red Bordeaux from one of Margaux’s historic Second Growth estates. Crafted mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot in support, it delivers the finesse and perfume that have made Margaux famous, wrapped in the concentration and precision of the outstanding 2020 vintage. Certified organic and biodynamic, this is a modern, terroir-driven interpretation of a legendary estate that dates back to the 17th century and was ranked Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in 1855.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Château Durfort Vivens Margaux 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-purple hue, hinting at both youth and intensity. Swirl the glass and you’ll find lifted aromas of blackcurrant, wild blackberry and ripe plum, interwoven with violet, graphite, cedar, and a touch of tobacco leaf and spice from élevage. Subtle notes of crushed herbs and floral tones underline the wine’s Margaux elegance.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a core of pure, dark fruit framed by fine-grained, silky tannins. Layers of cassis, black cherry and blueberry are complemented by hints of cocoa, pencil shavings, and savory earth, giving depth and complexity without heaviness. The acidity is bright and well integrated, lending freshness to a long, lingering finish marked by florality and mineral tension. Still youthful, the 2020 has the structure to evolve beautifully over 15–20 years, gradually gaining tertiary notes of leather, cigar box and forest floor while retaining its signature grace.
Production
The grapes for Château Durfort Vivens Margaux 2020 come from gravel-rich soils typical of Margaux, where deep layers of gravel and sand over limestone and clay offer excellent drainage and naturally low yields—ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. Farmed organically and biodynamically, the vineyards are managed parcel by parcel, with careful canopy work and green harvesting to ensure optimal ripeness. The grapes are picked by hand at optimal maturity, sorted rigorously, and vinified in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve fruit purity and aromatic finesse. The wine is then aged in a combination of French oak barrels (a portion new) and, for some lots, larger vessels such as amphora or foudres, allowing tannins to polish while maintaining energy and transparency to the terroir.
Food & Serving
Château Durfort Vivens Margaux 2020 is a refined partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef fillet, duck breast, or veal with morel sauce. It also pairs wonderfully with game birds, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and delicacy of texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a gentler, shorter decant primarily to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Durfort Vivens is one of the historic names of Margaux, officially classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate takes its name from the Durfort de Duras family, who established its reputation centuries ago, and today it is led by Gonzague Lurton, a member of the renowned Lurton wine family. Under his stewardship, Durfort Vivens has become a reference point in the appellation for organic and biodynamic viticulture, emphasizing purity, precision and a strong expression of terroir. Recognized increasingly by critics and collectors alike, the château has seen a notable rise in quality and acclaim over the past two decades, cementing its role as one of the most compelling, terroir-driven properties in Margaux.
