Description

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s La Croix de Beaucaillou is the château’s second wine, offering an accessible introduction to the refined, classically structured style of Saint-Julien. The 2016 vintage is particularly appealing, combining the appellation’s hallmark elegance and freshness with generous fruit, polished tannins and excellent ageing potential.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by notes of cedar, graphite, violet and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with concentrated dark fruit, lively acidity and finely grained tannins. A mineral, savoury finish adds length and balance, while a period of bottle ageing will allow the fruit, oak and tertiary nuances to knit together beautifully. The 2016 vintage is already enjoyable with decanting, but it should develop further over the next 8–12 years, gaining complexity and softness as it matures.

Production
The vineyards of Saint-Julien are characterised by deep Günzian gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to produce concentrated, finely structured fruit. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation, allowing the château to preserve purity and precision. The wine is matured in French oak, with the balance of new and seasoned barrels used to support the fruit rather than overpower it.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately 30–60 minutes, particularly when enjoying the bottle in its youth. Its combination of dark fruit, freshness and polished tannins makes it a natural match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, venison and hearty mushroom dishes. It also pairs well with mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Founded in the 18th century, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most celebrated estates in Saint-Julien and was classified as a Deuxième Cru in the 1855 Classification. The château takes its name from the “beautiful stones” of the gravelly soils surrounding the property, a defining feature of its wines. Under the Borie family, Ducru-Beaucaillou has built a reputation for producing elegant, long-lived Bordeaux with exceptional finesse, while La Croix de Beaucaillou provides a more approachable expression of the estate’s style.
