Description

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé 2006 is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux from one of the Médoc’s most revered Second Growth estates. This is a deeply classical claret, marrying power, polish, and minerality in a way that only top Saint-Julien can. The 2006 vintage produced wines of structure and freshness, and Ducru-Beaucaillou has crafted a bottle that is both elegant today and built for long-term cellaring. Its unique selling point lies in the estate’s exceptional “beau caillou” (beautiful pebbles) terroir, which imparts a distinctive graphite-tinged minerality and remarkable finesse to the Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend. Known for its consistency and longevity, Ducru-Beaucaillou has been celebrated since the 19th century as one of Bordeaux’s finest “super seconds,” often rivaling First Growths in quality and reputation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2006 Ducru-Beaucaillou shows a deep garnet core with a subtly bricking rim, reflecting both its age and careful evolution. The nose is complex and expressive, revealing layers of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry woven with cedar, cigar box, graphite, and pencil shavings, alongside hints of violets, tobacco leaf, and a touch of earthy truffle and spice from bottle age and oak maturation. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with refined structure and classic Left Bank poise. Ripe cassis, black plum, and blackberry fruit are supported by firm yet polished tannins and a vibrant line of acidity, giving the wine freshness and drive. Secondary notes of leather, cedar, espresso, and savory herbs unfold with air, leading into a long, persistent finish marked by minerality and finely integrated oak. The 2006 still has notable aging potential: while drinking beautifully now with proper preparation, top bottles can continue to develop further complexity for another decade or more under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is situated in Saint-Julien on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, where its vineyards overlook the Gironde estuary and rest on deep Günzian gravel soils mixed with stones—the famous “beaux cailloux”—over a subsoil of clay and marl. This exceptionally draining terroir forces the roots deep into the ground and is particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing to the wine’s finesse, aromatic complexity, and mineral backbone. The grapes, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a proportion of Merlot, are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the grand vin. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to preserve the identity of each plot, followed by a traditional maceration to extract color, tannin, and aromatics. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—an important proportion of which are new—for around 18 months, with careful rackings and blending, resulting in a polished, ageworthy Saint-Julien of great precision.

Food & Serving
This 2006 Ducru-Beaucaillou pairs beautifully with classic, refined dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye or entrecôte steak, beef Wellington, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also complements richer poultry preparations like roast duck, mushroom-based dishes, truffled veal, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting is strongly recommended for a mature vintage like 2006: allow 1–2 hours in a decanter to let the wine open, shed any remaining youthful edges, and fully reveal its layered bouquet and harmonious palate.

Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou has been a flagship of Saint-Julien since the 18th century and earned its status as a Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Named after the beautiful stones that define its vineyards, the estate has long been regarded as one of the so‑called “super seconds,” often cited alongside the Médoc’s most elite properties. Under the stewardship of the Borie family since the mid‑20th century, Ducru-Beaucaillou has undergone significant modernization and quality-focused investment, cementing its reputation for producing wines of remarkable elegance, purity, and longevity. Today, it stands as one of the most respected producers in the Médoc, consistently lauded by critics and collectors for its refined, ageworthy expressions of Saint-Julien terroir.
