Description
Château d’Issan 2020 is a refined Margaux from one of Bordeaux’s historic classified growth estates. Celebrated for its elegant structure, fragrant aromatics and beautifully polished tannins, this vintage combines classic Left Bank character with the generous concentration of the 2020 growing season. The château is a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification and is traditionally associated with the wedding feast of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet in 1152.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, accompanied by violet, cedar, graphite and subtle spice. With time in the glass, hints of tobacco and finely integrated oak emerge.
The palate is poised and layered, balancing ripe dark fruit with fresh acidity and refined, silky tannins. Notes of cassis, black cherry and dark chocolate are framed by a mineral, lightly savoury finish. Château d’Issan 2020 is already approachable with decanting, but its structure and balance suggest excellent ageing potential—roughly 15–25 years under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The vineyards lie in the Margaux appellation on well-drained gravel soils, which encourage deep rooting and help produce wines with both perfume and structure. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing the fruit, tannins and subtle wood influence to integrate while preserving the hallmark elegance of Margaux.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast and venison, it also works beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffled preparations and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours before serving, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth; older bottles should be decanted gently and briefly, mainly to separate any sediment.
Producer
Château d’Issan is one of Margaux’s most historic estates, with a documented heritage stretching back centuries. Its name became especially prominent through the 1855 Classification, in which it was recognised as a Troisième Cru Classé. The estate’s gravel terroirs and focus on precision have helped establish it as one of the appellation’s most distinctive producers, known for wines that unite aromatic finesse, classical Bordeaux structure and graceful longevity.
