Description
Château des Graviers Margaux Bio 2015 is a characterful, organically farmed red from one of Bordeaux’s most revered appellations. Sourced from gravelly soils in the heart of Margaux, it offers classic left-bank structure with a notably elegant, refined profile. This 2015 vintage, from an excellent Bordeaux year, showcases the finesse of a carefully crafted blend of all six traditional Bordeaux grapes, farmed biodynamically long before it was fashionable in the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Margaux shows a deep ruby color with garnet reflections beginning to appear at the rim, a sign of its graceful evolution in bottle. The nose is complex and inviting, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, followed by notes of cedar, graphite, violets, and dried rose petals. With air, subtler layers emerge: tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, a hint of cocoa, and gentle sweet spice from careful oak aging.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a finely knit tannic structure and a long, streamlined finish. Ripe cassis and dark plum fruit are framed by lively acidity, while savory notes of tobacco, forest floor, and subtle leather begin to develop, reflecting its decade of age. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and length, Merlot brings suppleness, and the minority grapes—Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Carménère—add floral lift, spice, and depth. The 2015 is beautifully balanced now but still has the structure to evolve further; it should drink well through the next 8–10 years, gaining more tertiary complexity over time.
Production
Château des Graviers takes its name from the classic gravel (“graviers”) soils that define Margaux, which provide superb drainage and help produce wines of notable finesse and aromatic complexity. The vineyards, averaging around 30 years of age, are cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles, with Christophe Landry having converted the estate starting from the 2009 vintage—still a rarity in Bordeaux. The blend in 2015 comprises roughly 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, and 2% Carménère, all hand-harvested at optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux vinification is employed: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentation, and maturation in French oak barrels (a proportion new, the rest seasoned) to integrate tannins and enhance complexity without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
This Margaux is a versatile partner for refined, flavourful dishes. It shines alongside roast lamb with herbs, classic entrecôte or ribeye steak, duck breast, or game birds such as guinea fowl. Mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda also work beautifully with its earthy, savory nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the aromatics and preserve freshness. Given its age and structure, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if enjoyed in the next few years.
Producer
Château des Graviers is a family-run estate in Margaux, now in the hands of Christophe Landry, the great-grandson of the founder. Over generations, the family has carefully expanded and refined their holdings on prime gravelly plots, focusing on expressing the elegance and perfume that have made Margaux one of the most esteemed appellations of the Haut-Médoc. Landry’s decision to convert the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming from the 2009 vintage sets Château des Graviers apart in a region where such practices are still far from the norm. Today, the estate is recognized among discerning Bordeaux lovers as a standout ‘insider’ château—offering authentic Margaux character, serious craftsmanship, and terroir-driven wines at far more accessible prices than the region’s most famous classified growths.
