Description
Château de Rouffiac’s Rouffiac Malbec 2023 is a vibrant expression of Cahors, the historic home of Malbec in southwest France. Deeply coloured yet fresh and approachable, it combines ripe dark fruit, gentle tannins and a mineral finish. The estate’s vineyards were planted in 1971, the same year the Cahors appellation was formally established.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep purplish-red colour. Its expressive nose offers aromas of blueberries, black cherries and violets, complemented by a subtle touch of spice. On the palate, juicy red-fruit flavours are supported by soft tannins and a refreshing mineral finish, giving the wine both richness and energy.
Enjoyable in its youth for its bright fruit and supple texture, the 2023 vintage should also develop additional complexity over the next few years when carefully stored. Its fresh, balanced style makes it particularly easy to enjoy without lengthy cellaring.
Production
The vineyards are located on the right bank of the Lot River in the western part of the Cahors appellation, around Duravel and Puy-l’Évêque. South-facing parcels at varying elevations benefit from excellent sunlight, while the region’s clay-limestone soils and proximity to the river contribute both body and freshness. Winemaker Stéphane Revel and his team work sustainably and as organically as possible. The wines are fermented without added sulphites and with minimal intervention, after which only a small amount of sulphur is used—well below the limits for organic farming—to preserve the wine’s fruit-driven character.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled beef, lamb, sausages and other richly flavoured meats, this Cahors Malbec also works well with hearty stews, roasted vegetables and mature cheeses. Serve slightly cool at around 16–18°C. It can be enjoyed straight from the bottle, although a brief decant of 30–60 minutes may help open up its dark-fruit aromas and soften the texture further.
Producer
Château de Rouffiac is a beautifully situated estate in the Lot River valley, within the Cahors wine region of Occitanie. Its vineyards are spread across several of the appellation’s characteristic soil types, with predominantly southern exposure on the river’s right bank. Under the guidance of Stéphane Revel, the estate focuses on sustainable, low-intervention winemaking that aims to express the natural fruit and mineral character of Cahors Malbec.
