Description
Château Lynch-Bages 2022 is a powerful and polished Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, it combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the depth and refinement that have made Lynch-Bages a benchmark of the appellation for generations.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2022 opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and violets, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite and finely toasted oak. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and layers of dark fruit, liquorice and spice.
Despite its generosity, the wine has the structure and balance to develop beautifully in bottle. It can be enjoyed from around 2028, but will continue to gain complexity over the following two decades or more when properly cellared.
Production
The vineyards lie on Pauillac’s characteristic deep gravel soils, which provide excellent drainage and encourage the vines to develop remarkable concentration while retaining freshness. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. The wine is then matured in French oak, a significant proportion of it new, allowing the fruit, tannins and oak to integrate during extended élevage.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast lamb, grilled or roasted beef, venison and other richly flavoured game, Château Lynch-Bages also works beautifully with truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Young bottles benefit from decanting for around two hours, while mature vintages should be decanted more gently to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Lynch-Bages takes its name from the Lynch family, who owned the estate in the 18th century, and from the Bages plateau on which its vineyards are planted. The property has been in the Cazes family since 1939 and has played a major role in establishing Pauillac as one of Bordeaux’s leading sources of age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon. Its Fifth Growth status and consistently high reputation have made Lynch-Bages one of the most sought-after wines in the Médoc.
