Description

Château de la Selve Viognier Saint Régis Bio 2023 is a vibrant, organically certified white from the sun‑kissed southern Rhône, crafted to showcase Viognier in its purest, most expressive form. Sourced from the IGP Coteaux de l'Ardèche, along the Ardèche tributary of the Rhône, it balances Mediterranean ripeness with refreshing precision. A thoughtful split aging in amphora and large used oak gives this wine a refined texture and depth without masking its aromatic charm, making it a standout choice for lovers of characterful yet finely structured whites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Viognier shines a pale, luminous yellow with subtle green reflections, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is delicate yet persistent, opening with fine citrus notes—think lemon zest and grapefruit—interwoven with wild herbs, a whisper of eucalyptus and cooling mint, and a gentle floral sweetness reminiscent of acacia blossom and honey. On the palate, the wine is medium‑bodied and beautifully poised, combining Viognier’s trademark aromatic richness with a surprisingly crisp line of acidity. Juicy stone fruits (white peach and apricot) meet citrus peel and a light herbal edge, while a faint honeyed note adds roundness without tipping into heaviness. The amphora portion lends purity and tension, while the large, used 500‑L barrels contribute subtle creaminess and a fine, almost chalky texture on the finish. Enjoy it now for its youthful brightness, though it has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years, gaining extra complexity and a touch more honeyed depth.

Production
The grapes for Saint Régis Bio 2023 come from IGP Coteaux de l'Ardèche, a cooler, slightly elevated pocket on the western side of the Rhône, where limestone and clay soils, combined with good diurnal range, help preserve aromatic intensity and freshness in Viognier. The vineyard is farmed organically, with low yields to concentrate flavor and ensure healthy, balanced fruit. Harvesting is done by hand at optimal ripeness to retain both aromatics and acidity. In the cellar, fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts, reflecting the estate’s minimally interventionist philosophy. The wine is then divided: 50% matures in neutral amphorae to emphasize purity and minerality, while the remaining 50% ages in large, used 500‑liter oak casks, which round out the texture and add gentle oxygenation without overt wood influence. The result is an articulate, terroir‑driven Viognier with both clarity and complexity.

Food & Serving
This Saint Régis Viognier is a versatile food partner, particularly suited to fragrant, subtly spiced dishes and refined Mediterranean cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled or poached fish, scallops, prawns, and seafood risottos, as well as roast chicken with herbs, veal in light cream sauces, or vegetable dishes such as fennel gratin, pumpkin ravioli, and Mediterranean mezze. Soft and semi‑hard cheeses—especially goat’s cheese, young Comté, or Tomme—also work well with its aromatic profile. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight freshness and complexity; a brief 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help the wine open up its floral and herbal nuances, especially in its first couple of years.

Producer
Château de la Selve is a dynamic, quality‑driven estate in the Ardèche, on the fringes of the southern Rhône, known for championing organic and artisanal viticulture in a region long considered off the main fine‑wine radar. Originally a historic property, the château has been transformed by a new generation of growers who emphasize low yields, respect for biodiversity, and minimal intervention in the cellar. By focusing on varieties well suited to the warming climate—like Viognier—and by using techniques such as amphora aging and indigenous yeast fermentations, they have helped to reposition the Coteaux de l'Ardèche as a source of serious, terroir‑expressive wines. Château de la Selve’s bottlings are now increasingly recognized among sommeliers and enthusiasts as some of the most characterful and forward‑thinking in their corner of the Rhône basin.
