Description

Château de la Selve Rosé L'Audacieuse Bio 2023 is not your typical summer rosé – it’s a refined, almost gastronomic wine that feels more like a serious Rhône blend in pink. Crafted by the talented young winemaker Benoît Chazallon, this cuvée showcases how expressive and complex biodynamic rosé can be. Sourced from carefully selected plots in the western Rhône’s IGP Coteaux de l’Ardèche, it offers a distinctive, sophisticated style with a nod to both tradition and innovation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, L’Audacieuse 2023 shows a luminous, pale copper-pink hue with clear, elegant, almost copper-colored reflections that immediately hint at depth and texture. The nose opens with delicate notes of red berries—think wild strawberries and redcurrants—slowly unfolding into nuances of blood orange zest, white peach and subtle floral tones from the Viognier, such as acacia blossom and hints of fresh herbs. A gentle mineral line and a touch of spice from the Syrah add definition and complexity. On the palate, the wine is dry, precise and beautifully structured, with far more tension and length than a simple terrace rosé. Juicy red berry fruit is layered with stone fruit, citrus, and a fine saline minerality that keeps everything fresh and focused. The texture is silky yet firm, thanks to aging on the fine lees, with a very gentle creaminess balanced by vibrant acidity. Subtle notes of white pepper and a faint, savory herbal edge linger on the finish. While it is wonderfully enjoyable now, its structure and élevage suggest it can develop positively over the next 2–3 years, gaining complexity and rounding out its aromatic profile.

Production
Château de la Selve lies in the IGP Coteaux de l’Ardèche, west of the southern Rhône, on clay-limestone soils that lend both freshness and mineral tension to the wines. Farmed organically and biodynamically, the estate focuses on healthy, living soils and low yields; for L’Audacieuse the yield is a modest 30 hl/ha. The grapes—primarily Syrah (60%), with Grenache Noir (20%) and Viognier (20%)—come from rigorously selected parcels, Serre de Brujas and Serre de Berty, and are harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and careful berry selection. Fermentation takes place with minimal mechanical intervention, and the wine is then aged about 70% in demi-muids (large oak barrels) and 30% in amphorae on its natural fine lees. A gentle bâtonnage is carried out toward the end of fermentation to build texture, followed by no fining and only a light filtration, preserving purity, character and authenticity.

Food & Serving
L’Audacieuse is a food-friendly rosé that shines at the table. Its structure and aromatic complexity make it an ideal partner for Mediterranean cuisine: grilled sea bream or red mullet, seared tuna, octopus salad, or prawns with garlic and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with Provençal dishes, roasted vegetables, charcuterie, soft goat cheeses, or lightly spiced Middle Eastern plates such as mezze, tabbouleh and grilled halloumi. Serve chilled but not icy, around 10–12 °C, to let its subtle aromatics fully express themselves. A brief decanting of 15–20 minutes in a carafe can help open up the nose and refine the texture, especially if serving with a full meal.

Producer
Château de la Selve is a 44-hectare estate in the Ardèche, at the western edge of the southern Rhône, where the influences of the Cévennes, the Rhône corridor and the local limestone plateaus converge. Originally a historic property, it has been transformed by Benoît Chazallon into a dynamic, quality-driven domaine committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The estate has become a reference point within the IGP Coteaux de l’Ardèche, showing how this lesser-known area can produce wines of real finesse, authenticity and terroir expression. Through meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a thoughtful use of demi-muids and amphorae, Château de la Selve has gained recognition among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts for its distinctive, characterful reds and refined, audacious rosés like L’Audacieuse.
