Description
Château Coutet Sauternes 2023 is a refined sweet wine from one of the most historic estates in Barsac, within the renowned Sauternes appellation. Celebrated for its balance of richness, freshness and aromatic complexity, Château Coutet has been recognised as a Premier Cru Classé since the 1855 classification.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous golden hue, with the depth of colour likely to develop further with bottle age. Its bouquet typically combines ripe apricot, peach, honey, citrus marmalade and delicate floral notes, often accompanied by subtle hints of spice and botrytis character.
On the palate, Château Coutet is richly textured yet lifted by vibrant acidity. Sweet flavours of stone fruit, candied citrus and honey are balanced by a fresh, mineral finish, giving the wine impressive length rather than heaviness. The 2023 vintage can be enjoyed young for its expressive fruit, but it also has the structure to develop beautifully over many years in a good cellar.
Production
The vineyards lie on the clay-limestone soils of Barsac, a terroir particularly well suited to producing elegant, finely balanced sweet wines. Château Coutet’s wines are made primarily from Sémillon, supported by Sauvignon Blanc and a small proportion of Muscadelle. Grapes are harvested by hand in successive passes, selecting bunches affected by noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea, before gentle pressing and fermentation. The wine is then matured in oak, allowing its fruit, sweetness and acidity to integrate.
Food & Serving
Serve Château Coutet lightly chilled at approximately 10–12°C. It is a classic partner for foie gras, blue cheeses and fruit-based desserts, while its acidity also works well with spicy Asian cuisine or roasted poultry with a sweet-savoury glaze. Decanting is not essential for a young bottle, but a short decant can help open the wine; older vintages are best handled gently and served soon after opening.
Producer
Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in the Barsac area, with a history dating back several centuries. Its wines have long been esteemed for combining the opulence expected of Sauternes with the freshness and finesse associated with Barsac. The estate’s Premier Cru Classé status in the 1855 classification confirms its enduring importance among Bordeaux’s leading sweet-wine producers.
