Description
Château Coutet 2021 is a refined sweet wine from Barsac, one of the most distinguished terroirs within the Sauternes appellation. A Premier Cru Classé estate since the 1855 classification, Coutet is celebrated for combining the richness of noble-rot-affected grapes with freshness, precision and an elegant mineral character.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a luminous golden colour, with an inviting nose of ripe stone fruit, citrus zest, honey and delicate floral notes. On the palate, it is richly sweet yet balanced by lively acidity, offering flavours of apricot, quince, candied citrus and subtle spice, followed by a long, fresh finish with a gentle mineral edge.
The 2021 vintage is marked by elegance and freshness rather than sheer opulence, making this a graceful and versatile expression of Coutet. It can be enjoyed now with a short period of aeration, but its balance and concentration should allow it to develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years when properly stored.
Production
Château Coutet’s vineyards lie on the clay-and-limestone soils of Barsac, where the proximity of the Ciron and Garonne rivers encourages the development of noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea. This naturally concentrates the grapes and contributes to the wine’s distinctive sweetness and complexity. Harvesting is carried out by hand in successive passes, selecting only suitably botrytised bunches. The wine is produced primarily from the classic Sauternes varieties, led by Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a small proportion of Muscadelle, before fermentation and maturation designed to preserve both richness and freshness.
Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 10–12°C. Château Coutet pairs naturally with foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Stilton, and desserts based on apricot, pear, citrus or vanilla. It is also excellent with lightly spiced Asian cuisine or roasted poultry with fruit-based sauces. Decanting is not essential for a young vintage, although 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help open the wine; older bottles benefit from careful decanting to separate any sediment.
Producer
Château Coutet is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux and is located in Barsac, the part of the Sauternes region known for producing sweet wines with particular finesse and freshness. Classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, the château has played an important role in establishing the reputation of Barsac’s botrytised wines. Its historic estate, distinctive terroir and consistent focus on balanced, age-worthy sweet wines have made Château Coutet one of the appellation’s most respected producers.
