Description
Château Cos d’Estournel 2020 is a powerful yet refined Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, the château is celebrated for its distinctive pagoda-style architecture and wines that combine impressive structure with aromatic sophistication. The 2020 vintage offers excellent concentration, freshness and long-term cellaring potential.
Tasting Notes
Deeply coloured, with an intense ruby-crimson appearance. The nose opens with ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, cedar, graphite, liquorice and subtle exotic spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and remarkably concentrated, with polished tannins, vibrant acidity and layers of dark fruit, dark chocolate and mineral notes. A long, persistent finish reveals the wine’s balance and complexity. While approachable with decanting, it should develop beautifully over the next 15–25 years.
Production
The vineyards are situated on a gravelly hill overlooking the Gironde estuary, where well-draining gravel soils are interspersed with clay and benefit from the moderating influence of the river. The 2020 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation in temperature-controlled vessels, followed by maturation in French oak. The estate’s precise, parcel-by-parcel approach aims to preserve freshness while giving the wine its characteristic depth and structure.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately two hours, particularly while the wine is young. Its powerful structure makes it an excellent partner for roast beef, grilled or braised lamb, venison and other game dishes. It also pairs well with richly flavoured mushroom preparations, truffle dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in the early 19th century, Château Cos d’Estournel takes its name from the hill—‘Cos’—and its former owner Louis Gaspard Lacoste, Marquis d’Estournel. The estate’s exotic architecture reflects the founder’s fascination with the East and has become one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable landmarks. Located in Saint-Estèphe and classified as a Second Growth in 1855, Cos d’Estournel is widely regarded as one of the Médoc’s leading estates, known for producing deeply coloured, age-worthy wines with remarkable aromatic detail.
