Description

Château Cos d’Estournel 2017 is a distinguished Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Estèphe, renowned for its exotic pagoda-inspired architecture and powerful, age-worthy wines. As a Deuxième Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, Cos d’Estournel is one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates, combining Saint-Estèphe structure with remarkable polish and aromatic complexity.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in appearance, the wine opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by cedar, tobacco, graphite and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with ripe tannins, refreshing acidity and a firm mineral core typical of Saint-Estèphe. Dark fruit flavours are joined by hints of dark chocolate, violet and gentle oak, leading to a long, structured finish. Although approachable with decanting, the 2017 vintage has the concentration and tannic framework to develop further in bottle. It should drink well over the next decade or more, with additional notes of leather, cigar box and savoury spice emerging with maturity.

Production
The vineyards of Cos d’Estournel lie on gravelly slopes over clay and limestone soils, allowing excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture to support the vines. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, with each parcel vinified separately. The wine is then matured in French oak, allowing its fruit, structure and mineral character to integrate gradually.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for roast beef, grilled or braised lamb, venison and other richly flavoured game dishes. It also pairs well with beef Wellington, mushroom-based dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for one to two hours when serving young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic depth.

Producer
Founded in the early 19th century by Louis Gaspard Lacoste, Château Cos d’Estournel quickly established a reputation for ambitious, distinctive wines. The estate’s striking architecture, inspired by the owner’s travels in the East, has become an emblem of Saint-Estèphe. Classified as a Deuxième Cru in 1855, Cos d’Estournel remains one of the appellation’s leading properties, celebrated for producing powerful yet refined wines with considerable ageing potential.
