Description
Château Cheval Blanc 2023 is a benchmark Saint-Émilion red, combining exceptional perfume, precision and depth with the estate’s renowned Cabernet Franc character. Situated on the border between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, this legendary château has long been regarded as one of Bordeaux’s greatest names, and the 2023 vintage is widely considered one of the year’s outstanding references.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, captivating colour, followed by an exceptionally refined and layered bouquet of violets, rose petals, blackcurrants, ripe black cherries and blue plums. Subtle notes of graphite, cedar and spice add further complexity and depth.
On the palate, Château Cheval Blanc 2023 is remarkably precise, with a silky texture, vibrant acidity and velvet-smooth tannins. The finish is exceptionally long, mineral and elegant, balancing intensity with finesse. While already compelling for its aromatic purity and graceful structure, this is a wine with considerable ageing potential and should develop beautifully over several decades in a well-kept cellar.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie on a highly distinctive terroir at the meeting point of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, where the varied soils are particularly well suited to Cabernet Franc and other traditional Bordeaux varieties. Each parcel is cultivated and vinified separately, allowing the château to express subtle differences in site and ripeness. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity and fermented in temperature-controlled concrete vats. After extensive tastings, the final blend is assembled and matured for approximately 18 months in 100% new French oak barriques, followed by very limited clarification to preserve the wine’s finesse and precision.
Food & Serving
This powerful yet refined Bordeaux is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison and other carefully prepared game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms and mature hard cheeses. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decanting is recommended when opening the wine young—ideally for two to three hours—to allow its perfume and texture to unfold; older bottles should be decanted carefully to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious estates, with a celebrated history in Saint-Émilion and a unique position close to the Pomerol border. The château has historically held the highest level of Saint-Émilion classification and is renowned worldwide for wines that unite power, aromatic complexity and elegance. Since its acquisition by the Arnault and Frère families, the estate has invested significantly in precision viticulture, sustainability and an ultramodern cellar designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc, enabling every parcel to be handled with exceptional care.
