Description
Cheval des Andes 2019 is a refined Mendoza red born from the collaboration between Château Cheval Blanc of Saint-Émilion and Terrazas de los Andes. Combining the depth and floral character of high-altitude Malbec with the structure of Bordeaux varieties, it offers an elegant, age-worthy expression of Argentina’s modern winemaking heritage.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in appearance, the 2019 vintage opens with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plum, violet and subtle graphite, complemented by hints of cedar, tobacco and sweet spice. The palate is concentrated yet poised, with layers of black fruit, cocoa and savoury spice supported by polished tannins and fresh acidity.
Long and refined on the finish, this is a powerful wine with impressive balance rather than overt heaviness. It can be enjoyed now after decanting, but its structure and freshness suggest excellent ageing potential over the next 10–15 years, or longer under suitable cellaring conditions.
Production
The grapes are sourced from high-altitude vineyards in Mendoza, where intense sunlight, cool nights and low humidity encourage slow, even ripening while preserving acidity and aromatic definition. The blend is predominantly Malbec, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varieties, with careful parcel selection and hand harvesting. Fermentation and maturation are carried out with a focus on preserving purity, texture and complexity, including ageing in French oak.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after decanting for approximately one to two hours, particularly when enjoying the wine in its youth. Its concentration and polished tannins make it an excellent partner for grilled or slow-roasted beef, lamb, venison, rich mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Cheval des Andes brings together the heritage of Château Cheval Blanc, one of Saint-Émilion’s most celebrated estates, and the Mendoza expertise of Terrazas de los Andes. Established to explore the potential of Argentina’s high-altitude vineyards, the project has become one of the country’s benchmark fine-wine producers, creating Bordeaux-inspired wines that retain the generous fruit, freshness and distinctive character of Mendoza.
