Description

Château Cantenac Brown Grand Cru Classé Margaux 2021 is a poised and finely sculpted expression of one of Bordeaux’s most elegant appellations. Classified as a Third Growth in the historic 1855 classification, this wine marries the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the supple charm of Merlot in a remarkably pure, modern style. The 2021 vintage emphasizes freshness, precision, and classic Margaux finesse, making it an outstanding choice for collectors and lovers of structured, age-worthy Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Margaux shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose is refined and layered: blackcurrant, blackberry, and wild red berries mingle with notes of violet, graphite, cedar, and a delicate touch of tobacco and cocoa from élevage in French oak. Subtle hints of crushed flowers and wet stone underscore its Left Bank pedigree. On the palate, Château Cantenac Brown 2021 is medium to full-bodied with a firm, finely woven tannic structure and a vibrant, mouthwatering acidity that reflects the cooler, more classical character of the vintage. Flavors of cassis, ripe plum, and black cherry unfold alongside savory hints of pencil shavings, forest floor, and subtle spice. The oak is well-judged, adding polish without overwhelming the fruit. While already harmonious, this wine is built to evolve: it should start to show beautifully after 5–7 years in bottle and has the potential to age gracefully for 15–20 years, gaining complexity and silky texture over time.

Production
Château Cantenac Brown lies in the heart of Margaux on the left bank of the Gironde, with vineyards rooted in the deep gravel soils that have long defined the greatest Cabernet-based wines of the Médoc. These well-draining gravel ridges, interspersed with sand and clay, provide ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, encouraging deep root systems and naturally moderated yields. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the Grand Vin. Vinification typically occurs in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity, followed by aging in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to build structure, texture, and aromatic complexity while respecting the delicacy of the Margaux terroir.

Food & Serving
This Cantenac Brown is a natural partner for refined dishes that echo its elegance and structure: think roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal chops, duck breast, or classic French fare such as entrecôte Bordelaise or beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and balance. For current drinking in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; as it matures and develops tertiary notes, a gentle 30–45 minute decant will usually be sufficient.

Producer
Château Cantenac Brown traces its origins back to the early 19th century, when it was developed by the Scottish-born John Lewis Brown, whose name and distinctive Tudor-style château have become iconic in Margaux. Classified as a Third Growth in 1855, the estate has long been recognized as one of the key reference points of the appellation, known for producing wines that combine depth and structure with Margaux’s hallmark perfume and finesse. In recent decades, significant investment in the vineyard and cellar, along with a strong focus on precision viticulture and sustainability, has elevated quality even further. Today, Cantenac Brown is widely regarded as one of the rising stars of the Médoc, consistently delivering wines that captivate both serious collectors and drinkers seeking classic, terroir-driven Bordeaux.
