Château Calon-Segur, Saint Estèphe Le C de Calon-Ségur 2020

Le C de Calon-Ségur 2020 offers an approachable introduction to the character of Château Calon-Ségur, one of Saint-Estèphe’s most recognisable estates. Made from younger-vine fruit, it combines the appellation’s classic structure and dark-fruited intensity with a more immediate, supple style than the château’s grand vin.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by subtle notes of violet, cedar and gentle spice. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruit, fresh acidity and polished tannins. A savoury mineral character adds depth to the finish, which is persistent without being overly austere. It is enjoyable now with some aeration and should develop further over the next several years.

Production
Sourced from the gravelly soils of Saint-Estèphe, where the proximity of the Gironde helps moderate the maritime climate, Le C de Calon-Ségur reflects the appellation’s classic Cabernet-led style. The wine is produced from younger-vine parcels and carefully selected grapes, followed by traditional Bordeaux vinification with controlled fermentation and maturation in oak. The 2020 vintage is known for ripe fruit, concentration and balanced freshness.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C. Decanting for around 30–60 minutes will help open the wine, particularly when enjoyed in its youth. Its ripe fruit and structured palate make it a natural partner for roast lamb, beef fillet, venison, duck, grilled steak and richly flavoured mushroom dishes. It also works well with mature hard cheeses.
