Château Calon-Segur, Saint Estèphe 2023

Château Calon-Ségur 2023 is a classic Saint-Estèphe red from one of Bordeaux’s most distinctive estates, renowned for its iconic heart-shaped label and refined, age-worthy wines. Situated beside the Gironde estuary, the château produces a structured Médoc wine that combines dark-fruit depth with freshness, polished tannins and impressive length.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep, intense colour. On the nose, it offers expressive aromas of dark fruits and blackcurrants, complemented by subtle spice. The palate is structured and well defined, with refreshing acidity, ripe tannins and a long, balanced finish. Its concentration and firm structure suggest excellent cellaring potential. While approachable with decanting, the 2023 should develop greater complexity over the next decade and continue to mature gracefully for many years thereafter.

Production
The vineyards lie north of Saint-Estèphe, directly alongside the Gironde River, where gravel and clay soils contribute both drainage and depth to the wine. Grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and concrete vats, allowing precise extraction and preservation of freshness. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, partly new, for approximately 18–20 months.

A natural partner for grilled or slow-roasted beef, lamb and game, Château Calon-Ségur 2023 also suits classic French cuisine, including rich braises and refined meat dishes. Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant for 1–2 hours when enjoying the wine young to open its dark-fruit aromas and soften its youthful structure.
