Château Calon-Segur, Saint Estèphe 2022

Château Calon-Ségur 2022 is a powerful, classic Saint-Estèphe from one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Famous for the heart on its label and its long-standing reputation for producing structured, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines, this vintage combines concentration with the château’s characteristic freshness and elegance.

Tasting Notes
Deep purple in appearance, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, followed by notes of violet, cedar, graphite and subtle spice. The palate is full-bodied and energetic, with generous dark-fruit flavour supported by firm but refined tannins, bright acidity and a long, mineral finish. Calon-Ségur’s 2022 has the structure to develop beautifully in bottle. While approachable with extended aeration, it should reward cellaring for many years, gradually gaining greater complexity and savoury, tobacco and earthy nuances.

Production
The estate’s vineyards are situated in Saint-Estèphe on gravelly soils over clay, a combination that promotes excellent drainage while helping retain moisture during warm, dry periods. The blend is traditionally led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with each parcel vinified separately before the final blend is assembled. Careful selection and maturation in oak help shape the wine while preserving the freshness and distinctive mineral character of the terroir.

Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to temperature. Decant for around two hours when enjoying the wine young, as this helps soften its firm tannins and release its aromatic complexity. Its structure makes it a natural partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, duck, grilled ribeye and richly flavoured mushroom dishes, as well as mature hard cheeses.

Château Calon-Ségur is one of the most historic estates in Saint-Estèphe and is classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. The château takes its name from the former Calon estate and is instantly recognisable by the heart on its label, inspired by the words traditionally attributed to the Marquis de Ségur: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” Known for its distinctive, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines, the property remains one of the appellation’s most emblematic producers.
