Description

Château Branaire-Ducru 2023 is a refined Saint-Julien red from a Fourth Growth estate in the 1855 Classification. Its classic Médoc character combines cassis, cedar and graphite with precise tannins, lively freshness and a long, balanced finish. Situated in the western part of Saint-Julien, the property benefits from its proximity to Château Beychevelle and the appellation’s distinguished gravel soils.

Tasting Notes
The wine appears deep ruby to garnet in the glass. Its aromatic profile is elegant and focused, with ripe blackcurrant, cedarwood and graphite alongside a subtle mineral character. On the palate, it is pure and classically structured, offering fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity and a composed balance between fruit, oak and savoury depth. The finish is long and persistent, suggesting that the wine will develop greater complexity with bottle age. It should drink well from around 2028, with the potential to mature gracefully over the following decade or longer when properly stored.

Production
The vineyards lie on the classic gravel soils of Saint-Julien, which provide excellent drainage and help give the wine both structure and freshness. Harvesting and vinification are handled with a strong focus on precision and terroir expression, with each parcel fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, partly new, adding texture and refinement while allowing the fruit and mineral character to remain at the forefront.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come gently up to temperature. Château Branaire-Ducru 2023 is a natural match for grilled or rare-to-medium-rare beef and lamb, as well as classic French dishes served with spiced but not overly heavy sauces. Decanting for around 1–2 hours is recommended when serving the wine young; older bottles may benefit from careful decanting to remove sediment, but should not be left exposed to air for too long.

Producer
Château Branaire-Ducru is a historic estate in Saint-Julien and has held Fourth Growth status since the 1855 Classification of the Médoc. The property is recognised for producing elegant, precise wines that express the freshness and gravel-driven character of the appellation. Its modern winemaking approach, parcel-by-parcel vinification and restrained use of French oak reflect the estate’s commitment to terroir-led quality.
