Description
Amiral de Beychevelle 2017 is the second wine of Château Beychevelle, one of the celebrated estates of Saint-Julien in Bordeaux. Elegant, supple and fruit-driven, it offers the château’s characteristic finesse in a more approachable style, designed to reveal its charm earlier than the Grand Vin. Its name pays tribute to Duc d’Épernon, the château’s 17th-century owner and an admiral in the French navy under Henri III.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. Its nose is inviting and expressive, combining ripe blackcurrant and blackberry with subtle floral notes, gentle spice and a discreet, polished oak character.
On the palate, Amiral de Beychevelle is smooth and generously textured, with vibrant dark-fruit flavours, well-integrated tannins and a refined, balanced finish. It has plenty of body while retaining the elegance associated with Saint-Julien. Although enjoyable now, the 2017 vintage should develop further over the next several years, particularly when well stored.
Production
Produced from younger vines at Château Beychevelle, Amiral de Beychevelle benefits from the same attentive viticultural practices as the estate’s Grand Vin, including careful vineyard management and meticulous grape sorting. The Saint-Julien terroir, known for its gravelly soils and excellent drainage, helps produce wines with both structure and aromatic finesse. Traditional vinification is followed by ageing in oak barrels, creating a polished wine that retains its fresh, lively fruit character.
Food & Serving
A natural partner for grilled lamb chops, braised lamb shank, slow-cooked stews and other richly flavoured barbecue dishes. It also pairs beautifully with mature, nutty cheeses such as Gruyère, Comté, Cantal, Reblochon and Beaufort. Serve at 16–18°C. The wine can be enjoyed without decanting, but a short decant of 30–60 minutes will help open its aromas and soften the youthful tannins.
Producer
Château Beychevelle is a historic Saint-Julien estate whose origins date back several centuries and whose distinctive château is one of the Médoc’s best-known landmarks. Classified as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate is recognised for producing wines that combine refinement, depth and classic Bordeaux character. Amiral de Beychevelle expresses this house style in a more accessible, earlier-drinking format while maintaining the estate’s emphasis on precision and elegance.
