Description
Château Beychevelle is a prestigious Fourth Growth Saint-Julien, classified in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. The 2021 vintage showcases the estate’s elegant, classically proportioned style, combining refined dark-fruit character with the freshness and structure typical of the year.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by cedar, graphite, violet and subtle spice. On the palate, it is poised and fresh, with polished tannins, lively acidity and a mineral, savoury finish. The 2021 vintage favours finesse and aromatic clarity over sheer power, making this a refined wine with excellent cellaring potential—enjoyable now with decanting, but capable of developing gracefully for 10–15 years or more.
Production
Beychevelle’s vineyards lie in the gravel-rich terroir of Saint-Julien, close to the Gironde estuary. These well-drained soils, combined with the region’s maritime influence, are particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and contribute structure, perfume and longevity. The wine is made from a traditional Left Bank Bordeaux blend, harvested selectively and vinified parcel by parcel before maturation in oak, allowing the fruit, tannins and wood to integrate harmoniously.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C. Decant for around one hour when drinking young to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s aromatic complexity. Its structure and savoury character make it an excellent partner for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, venison, grilled entrecôte and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Château Beychevelle is one of Saint-Julien’s most recognisable estates, known for its grand château, its distinctive ship motif and its long history on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The estate takes its name from the French expression meaning “lower the sails,” traditionally associated with ships passing the powerful Duke of Épernon. As a classified Fourth Growth, Beychevelle has earned a strong reputation for producing polished, elegant wines that combine Saint-Julien’s classic Cabernet-led structure with remarkable refinement.
