Description
Château Batailley 2019 Magnum is a classic Pauillac from one of the Médoc’s oldest estates, and a proud 5ème Cru Classé since 1855. Presented in magnum, it offers the kind of structure, depth, and aging potential that Bordeaux lovers look for, with the added benefit of slower, more graceful development in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark ruby color that hints at its concentration and pedigree. The nose is intense and refined, offering cassis, blackberry, graphite, licorice, loamy earth, and a subtle smoky-tobacco edge.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a broad, fleshy core of black fruit, lively acidity, and ripe, powdery tannins. Notes of cracked black pepper, graphite, and earthy minerality carry through to a long, focused finish. This is a serious Pauillac built for the cellar, with excellent aging potential over the next 15 to 20 years and beyond in magnum.
Production
Château Batailley’s vineyards lie on the gravelly, clay-tinged soils of Pauillac, where Cabernet Sauvignon thrives alongside Merlot and smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc. The estate’s 57 hectares are planted in a traditional Médoc proportion, and the fruit is harvested with precision to preserve freshness and balance. Vinification follows a classic Bordeaux approach, designed to bring out purity of fruit, structure, and the distinct Pauillac character that defines the wine.
Food & Serving
This magnum is ideal with classic Bordeaux-friendly dishes such as roast lamb, entrecôte, beef Wellington, venison, or duck with earthy accompaniments like mushrooms and truffle. Serve at 16–18°C for the best expression, and decant for 1 to 2 hours if drinking young to help the tannins open and the aromas unfold. It is especially well suited to a special dinner or long cellar aging.
Producer
Château Batailley has deep roots in Pauillac, with a history tied to the aftermath of the Hundred Years’ War and vineyards first planted on the site in the 16th century. The estate became a 5ème Cru Classé in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification and has remained closely associated with the Borie and Castéja families, whose stewardship has helped shape both the château and Borie-Manoux into major names in Bordeaux. Today, Château Batailley is widely respected for producing powerful, classically styled Pauillac at outstanding value for its level.
