Description
Château Angélus Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2011 is a refined expression from one of Bordeaux’s most revered Right Bank estates. Crafted predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this vintage captures the estate’s hallmark combination of depth, elegance and precision. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, Angélus marries centuries of tradition with meticulous modern winemaking, resulting in a wine of grace, structure and longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Château Angélus shows a deep garnet-ruby hue with slight brick nuances beginning to appear at the rim, reflecting its evolution. The nose is complex and layered, offering aromas of ripe black cherries, cassis and plum compote, interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa, graphite and a hint of dried violets and sweet spice. Subtle hints of truffle, leather and cigar box begin to emerge with air, underscoring its maturing character.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied wine with a poised, silky texture. The Merlot brings plush, dark-fruited richness, while the high proportion of Cabernet Franc contributes lift, freshness and a refined, almost floral backbone. Flavors of blackcurrant, ripe plum and black cherry are supported by fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and well-integrated oak, showing touches of mocha, clove and sandalwood. The finish is long, savoury and harmonious, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice and mineral. Now over a decade from harvest, the 2011 is entering a beautiful drinking window, with enough structure to continue evolving gracefully for several more years, offering optimal enjoyment through the mid-to-late 2020s depending on cellaring conditions.
Production
Château Angélus is situated on the south-facing slopes just outside the village of Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone and clay-sand soils provide an ideal setting for Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate’s amphitheatre-like terroir, with its excellent exposure and natural drainage, contributes to the wine’s depth and aromatic complexity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, followed by strict sorting to ensure only the finest berries are used. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with a careful extraction regime to capture color, aromatics and tannin without compromising finesse. The wine is then aged in predominantly new French oak barrels for an extended period, allowing the components to integrate and develop the signature Angélus balance of richness, complexity and elegance.
Food & Serving
Château Angélus 2011 pairs beautifully with classic, refined cuisine: think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged beef, veal chops, duck breast, or game birds such as pigeon. It also complements rich mushroom dishes, truffle-inflected recipes, and hard or semi-hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or well-aged Cheddar. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open its bouquet and soften the tannins, especially if opened before 2030.
Producer
Château Angélus is one of the most illustrious estates in Saint-Émilion, with a family history dating back to the 18th century. Named for the church bells (the ‘angelus’) that could historically be heard ringing from three local churches in the surrounding vineyards, the estate is now recognized as a Premier Grand Cru Classé and a benchmark of Right Bank Bordeaux. Under the stewardship of the de Boüard de Laforest family, Angélus has become renowned for its Cabernet Franc–driven style, meticulous vineyard management and exacting cellar practices. The château has garnered consistent acclaim from critics and collectors worldwide, reinforcing its status as a flagship property that exemplifies the grandeur and finesse of Saint-Émilion.
