Description
Château Angélus 2021 is a prestigious Saint-Émilion red wine from one of Bordeaux’s most recognisable estates. Known for its amphitheatrical vineyard site and Cabernet Franc-led style, the château produces wines that combine depth and structure with remarkable aromatic lift and a long capacity for development.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple in colour, the 2021 vintage opens with expressive aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet, graphite, cedar and subtle spice. On the palate, it is refined and focused, with concentrated dark fruit, fresh acidity and finely textured tannins. The vintage’s cooler conditions bring elegance and precision, while the wine’s underlying structure promises graceful development over the next 15–20 years, with careful cellaring.
Production
The vineyards lie on the celebrated south-facing slopes of Saint-Émilion, where limestone and clay soils provide both drainage and mineral freshness. Château Angélus is traditionally associated with a blend centred on Merlot and Cabernet Franc, supported by Cabernet Sauvignon, although the precise composition can vary by vintage. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected before fermentation and maturation in oak, allowing the wine to retain the character of the site while gaining complexity and polish.
Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to acclimatise. Decanting for around 1–2 hours is recommended when enjoyed young, both to open the wine’s aromatic profile and to soften its youthful structure. Its depth and freshness make it an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck with a rich jus, or mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Founded in the late 18th century, Château Angélus takes its name from the Angelus bells traditionally heard from the surrounding churches. The estate is situated in a natural amphitheatre near Saint-Émilion, a position that helps create a distinctive microclimate and supports the ripening of Cabernet Franc. Long regarded as one of the leading estates of the appellation, Angélus has achieved international recognition for its powerful yet polished wines and its important role in the modern history of Saint-Émilion.
