Description
Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 Demi (37.5 cl) offers a classic taste of the Southern Rhône in a convenient half-bottle format, perfect for intimate dinners or tasting flights. While not the most powerful vintage from this revered estate, it already shows charm and balance, with the promise to gain further depth in bottle. This traditional, tank-aged blend is anchored by old-vine Grenache and rounded out by Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise and Vaccarèse, reflecting the historic field-blend style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape displays a vibrant, medium ruby hue with a translucent rim that hints at its finesse-driven style rather than sheer power. The nose is lifted and peppery, offering pure notes of red cherry and wild raspberry, supported by subtle garrigue herbs, white pepper and a touch of dried flowers.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with a fresh, energetic core of red fruits rather than dense, brooding dark fruit. Juicy cherry, raspberry and a hint of red plum are framed by fine, powdery tannins and a lively line of acidity that keeps the wine nimble and food-friendly. The peppery, spicy character continues through the finish, adding complexity without heaviness. While already approachable in this demi format, Charvin’s wines are known to flesh out with a few more years of bottle age, developing additional depth and savory nuance over 5–8 years from vintage.
Production
Sourced from Charvin’s traditional parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this wine reflects the warm, stony terroir of the Southern Rhône, where vines grow among galets roulés (rounded river stones), clay and sandy soils that encourage concentration while preserving aromatic lift. The 2020 is a tank-raised blend of approximately 82% Grenache with 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah and 4% each of Counoise and Vaccarèse, echoing the classic multi-varietal approach of the appellation. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and sorted in the cellar before a traditional vinification: whole or mostly whole bunches, gentle extraction and fermentation in concrete or neutral tanks, followed by aging in tank rather than new oak to preserve purity, spice and the distinctive, terroir-driven character Charvin is known for.
Food & Serving
This style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an excellent match for herb-crusted lamb chops, roast duck, grilled sausages, ratatouille, or dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs and roasted vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, cassoulet or aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight the wine’s freshness and spice. In this half-bottle format, a short decant of 20–30 minutes can help the aromatics open, though it is quite accessible poured directly from the bottle.
Producer
Domaine Charvin is a highly regarded, family-run estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with roots in the region dating back to the 19th century. Known for its steadfastly traditional approach, the domaine has become a reference point for lovers of elegant, terroir-driven Southern Rhône reds. Eschewing flashy new oak, Charvin focuses on old-vine Grenache blends raised in tank, allowing the purity of fruit, peppery spice and the character of the stony plateau to shine through. Over the years, the winery has earned a strong following among critics and collectors alike, praised for crafting ageworthy yet remarkably drinkable Châteauneuf-du-Pape that speaks clearly of its place.
