Description
Chanin’s Zotovich Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021 is a finely balanced, round and supple expression of Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir, showing the precision and freshness that have made Gavin Chanin one of California’s standout winemakers. Sourced from a prized site in Santa Barbara County, it reflects both the vineyard’s cool-climate character and Chanin’s long-standing commitment to elegant, site-driven wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a polished, vibrant profile with lifted aromas of dark cherry, dried cranberry, salted pork, smoke, rose petals, and violets. The palate is elegant yet layered, with flavors of plum, dark cherry, raspberry, mint, cinnamon, and a subtle touch of licorice, all carried by a refined texture and excellent balance.
The wine already offers a compelling drinking experience now, but it also has the structure and harmony to develop beautifully over the next 7–8 years. With time, the savory nuances and floral elements are likely to deepen further.
Production
The grapes come from Zotovich Vineyard in Santa Rita Hills, a cool-climate area of Santa Barbara County known for producing expressive, finely structured Pinot Noir. Harvest and sorting are done by hand, and most clusters are destemmed before pressing. The wine is then aged for 17 months in French oak barrels, including 15% new oak, which adds subtle complexity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck, mushroom risotto, herb-crusted pork, grilled salmon, or dishes with earthy and savory elements. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 14–16°C, and consider decanting for 20–30 minutes if drinking it young to help the aromatics open up.
Producer
Chanin is the label of Gavin Chanin, a highly regarded California winemaker known for crafting restrained, terroir-focused wines that highlight the nuances of Santa Barbara County. He began working with fruit from Zotovich Vineyard in 2012 and has maintained a remarkably consistent level ever since, earning a strong reputation for precision, balance, and a distinctly elegant style.
