Description
Chanin Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2021 is a beautifully polished entry into Gavin Chanin’s acclaimed style, offering a remarkably elegant expression of Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir. Sourced from some of the region’s top vineyards, it captures the producer’s Burgundian-inspired finesse while retaining the sun-kissed charm of California.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Noir shows a bright, translucent ruby color that hints at its graceful, lighter-bodied profile. The nose is lifted and fragrant, with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, cranberry, and strawberry layered with cinnamon, fresh flowers, and subtle spice.
The palate is vibrant and precise, echoing the red-fruited character of the nose with fine acidity, gentle tannins, and a distinct mineral edge. It is made to be enjoyed young for its freshness and purity, though it should also hold well over the next few years as the fruit and spice continue to knit together.
Production
This wine is crafted from Pinot Noir grapes grown in several of the Santa Rita Hills’ most respected vineyard sites, benefiting from the cool coastal climate and marine influences of Santa Barbara County. Gavin Chanin tends to harvest slightly earlier than many California producers, preserving freshness, aromatic lift, and a more refined structure. Vinification is aimed at transparency and balance, allowing the fruit and site character to remain at the forefront.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatic detail. It pairs well with roasted duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, charcuterie, and delicate poultry preparations. Decanting is not necessary, but a short aeration can help the wine open up if enjoyed shortly after opening.
Producer
Chanin is the Santa Barbara-based project of winemaker Gavin Chanin, whose wines have earned widespread praise for their elegance, restraint, and Burgundian sensibility. He has helped define a more refined style of California Pinot Noir, with a strong focus on vineyard expression and balance. The Santa Rita Hills cuvée serves as an accessible introduction to his highly regarded winemaking philosophy.
