Description

Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses L.V. 1996 is a late-disgorged, single-vineyard prestige cuvée from one of Champagne’s most iconic slopes. Drawn from the legendary Clos des Goisses, this bottling showcases the remarkable structure and longevity of the 1996 vintage, refined by extended aging on the lees. The L.V. (Long Vieillissement) release offers an especially complex, mature expression for collectors and lovers of profound, gastronomic Champagne.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1996 Clos des Goisses L.V. shows a deep golden hue with a fine, persistent mousse – a visual cue to its long aging and concentration. The nose is layered and complex, unfolding with aromas of confit orange peel, coffee, toasted brioche, roasted nuts, and honeycomb, supported by hints of dried apricot and subtle spice. On the palate, this Champagne is full-bodied, fleshy, and seamless, delivering impressive depth and richness while remaining beautifully balanced. The flavors echo the nose—candied citrus, roasted coffee tones, caramelized orchard fruit, and warm pastry—wrapped around a spine of finely integrated acidity. The finish is long, saline, and mouthwatering, leaving a lingering impression of mineral tension and savoury complexity. Already at a glorious peak thanks to its late disgorgement, it has the structure to hold and evolve further over the next decade, though it is drinking superbly now.

Production
Clos des Goisses is a steep, south-facing, walled vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, one of Champagne’s most distinctive terroirs, known for producing exceptionally powerful, vinous wines. The blend is traditionally dominated by Pinot Noir with a proportion of Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from this single, chalk-rich slope that enjoys maximum sunshine and excellent drainage. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness to harness the natural intensity of the 1996 vintage, then gently pressed and vinified in a style that favors structure and complexity over dosage. The L.V. release benefits from an extended period of aging on the lees—far longer than standard—before late disgorgement and a very low dosage (Extra Brut), allowing the pure character of the vineyard and vintage to take center stage.

Food & Serving
This is a serious gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. Pair it with dishes such as lobster in a rich shellfish reduction, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, roasted poultry with truffle, or veal with creamy morel sauce. It also works beautifully alongside aged Comté, Parmesan, or hard alpine cheeses. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the full aromatic spectrum to unfold. Decanting for 20–30 minutes in a wide-based carafe, or simply pouring into large white wine glasses, can further enhance its complexity and texture.

Producer
Champagne Philipponnat is a historic, family-rooted house whose origins in Champagne date back to the 16th century, with a long-standing reputation for crafting characterful, terroir-driven wines. Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Philipponnat is best known for Clos des Goisses, one of the region’s first and most celebrated single-vineyard Champagnes, renowned for its power, longevity, and individuality. The estate has been a pioneer in expressing specific sites and low-dosage styles, earning a strong following among connoisseurs and critics alike. Today, Philipponnat remains a benchmark producer in Champagne, particularly revered for its late-disgorged and long-aged cuvées that showcase the full potential of great vintages like 1996.
