Description

Céline & Laurent Tripoz Pouilly-Loché 1ère Réserve Bio 2022 is an expressive, organically grown Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s smallest and least-known appellations. Crafted by a benchmark estate in Pouilly-Loché, this cuvée shows just how refined and characterful southern Burgundy can be when farmed biodynamically and handled with a light touch in the cellar. It’s a wine that marries classic Burgundian elegance with the vibrancy and purity of low-intervention winemaking.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1ère Réserve Bio 2022 is a bright, pale gold with subtle green reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose opens with pure citrus and orchard fruit—Meyer lemon, ripe pear and white peach—layered with chalky minerality, white flowers, and a touch of toasted hazelnut and brioche from its élevage in traditional Burgundian barrels. On the palate, it is precise yet generous, with a fine, linear acidity carrying flavors of lemon zest, green apple, and stone fruit over a core of wet stone and delicate spice. The oak is beautifully integrated, adding texture and a gentle creaminess without overwhelming the fruit. A saline, mouthwatering finish and a whisper of smoke underline its terroir-driven character. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 5–7 years, gaining complexity and a more pronounced nutty, honeyed dimension.

Production
Pouilly-Loché lies in the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy, where Chardonnay thrives on sun-exposed slopes of clay-limestone soils. At Domaine Céline et Laurent Tripoz, the vines for 1ère Réserve are around 30–45 years old, rooted in these mineral-rich hillsides and farmed according to biodynamic principles, which promote soil life and vine balance. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, then fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. The wine is aged for about twelve months in traditional Burgundian barrels, around 20% of which are new, lending discreet structure and complexity. Sulfur use is kept exceptionally low—only a small addition (around 15 mg/l) just before bottling—resulting in a wine that is very close in spirit to a true natural wine while remaining clean, precise, and stable.

Food & Serving
This Pouilly-Loché 1ère Réserve Bio 2022 is a natural match for refined yet unfussy dishes: think simply grilled or poached white fish, seared scallops, roast chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or fresh goat’s cheese and lightly aged cow’s milk cheeses. It also pairs beautifully with vegetable-based dishes like mushroom risotto, fennel gratin, or asparagus with beurre blanc. Serve at 10–12 °C to highlight its freshness and minerality; if the bottle is just opened, a brief decant of 20–30 minutes in a carafe can help the wine stretch its legs and reveal additional layers of aroma and flavor.

Producer
Domaine Céline et Laurent Tripoz is a small, quality-focused estate based in Loché, in the heart of the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy. Over the years, Céline and Laurent have become reference names for terroir-driven, organically and biodynamically farmed Chardonnay in this often-overlooked corner of Burgundy. Their commitment to hand harvesting, native-yeast fermentations, low sulfur additions and sensitive oak use has placed them among the leading artisan producers of the region. By championing appellations like Pouilly-Loché—where volumes are tiny and international recognition still modest—they have helped demonstrate that the Mâconnais can offer wines of real finesse and complexity, often at a far more compelling value than those from the more famous Côte d’Or.
