Description
Caymus-Suisun Petite Sirah Grand Durif 2020 is a bold, deeply colored red that gives center stage to a grape more often cast as a blending partner. Sourced from old-vine Petite Sirah in the warm Suisun Valley, just southeast of Napa, this wine showcases the full power and character of the variety. Crafted by Chuck Wagner and the Caymus team, it stands out as a distinctive, modern Californian red in a world where many wines are starting to taste the same.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine is almost opaque, with an inky black-purple hue that clings to the sides of the glass. The nose is generous and intense, offering layers of dark cherry, ripe plum, prune, and boysenberry, intertwined with dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, vanilla, and a touch of sweet baking spice from the oak.
On the palate, this Petite Sirah is plush and full-bodied, with a velvety texture and plenty of concentration. The dark fruit core is deep and mouth-filling, echoing black cherries, blackberries, and dried fruits, alongside cocoa, roasted coffee, and a gentle smokiness. Tannins are ripe and polished, giving structure without harshness, while balanced acidity keeps the wine from feeling heavy. The finish is long, warm, and persistent, with chocolate, spice, and dark fruit lingering beautifully. Enjoyable now for its opulence, it also has the stuffing to age gracefully for 8–10 years from vintage, developing more savory and tertiary notes over time.
Production
The fruit for this wine comes from Suisun Valley in California, a slightly warmer pocket than much of Napa, ideal for ripening thick-skinned varieties like Petite Sirah to full, expressive maturity. The old vines here dig deep into well-drained soils, concentrating flavor and natural intensity in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of only the best clusters. In the cellar, the wine is vinified to emphasize richness and texture, with controlled fermentation to extract color, flavor, and supple tannins without harshness. Maturation takes place in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels, adding layers of vanilla, spice, and subtle toast while preserving the grape’s distinct dark-fruited character.
Food & Serving
This is a natural partner for rich, flavorful dishes: think grilled ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, lamb shanks, smoky barbecue, or hearty stews with mushrooms and root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, blue cheese, and dark chocolate-based dishes for a more indulgent finish to a meal. Serve at about 16–18°C (60–64°F) to let the aromas and texture fully open up. A short decant of 30–60 minutes is recommended, especially while the wine is still young, to soften the tannins and reveal the full spectrum of fruit, spice, and cocoa notes.
Producer
Caymus is one of Napa Valley’s most recognized family wineries, founded by the Wagner family and brought to international acclaim through its richly styled Cabernet Sauvignons. With the Caymus-Suisun project, the family has expanded beyond Napa to explore the potential of nearby Suisun Valley, an area long known to insiders for its warm climate and high-quality fruit. Under the guidance of winemaker Chuck Wagner, Caymus has helped shine a spotlight on the region by crafting expressive, approachable wines that still retain a sense of place. The Petite Sirah Grand Durif is a statement of confidence in both the grape and the valley, and it has quickly earned strong consumer praise, reflected in its high ratings and growing reputation among lovers of powerful Californian reds.
