Description
Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Schoenenbourg 2017 is an expressive white wine from one of Alsace’s most historic hillside vineyards. Crafted from Traminer Aromatico (locally known as Gewurztraminer), it marries opulent aromatics with the poised structure that Schoenenbourg is famous for. This Grand Cru bottling captures the sun-drenched character of the site while retaining the precision and elegance that define top-tier Alsace whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2017 Gewurztraminer shows a bright, deep golden hue, hinting at both concentration and maturity. The nose is intense and alluring, with layers of rose petal, lychee, ripe mango and candied citrus peel, wrapped in notes of sweet spices, honey and a touch of ginger.
On the palate, it is generous and full-bodied, yet balanced by a refined, saline-mineral backbone typical of Schoenenbourg. Expect rich exotic fruit, rose, orange zest and subtle dried apricot, with a gentle touch of sweetness lifted by fresh, well-integrated acidity. The finish is long, spicy and mouth-coating, leaving lingering notes of floral honey and spice. 2017 has the structure and extract to age gracefully; it can be enjoyed now for its lush fruit, but will continue to develop more complex honeyed and tertiary notes over the next 8–12 years if well cellared.
Production
Schoenenbourg Grand Cru rises above the village of Riquewihr on steep south- and southeast-facing slopes, rooted in a complex mix of marl, gypsum (Keuper) and shell-rich soils that give both power and a marked mineral edge to Gewurztraminer. Grapes for this wine are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve delicate aromatics and allow careful selection of bunches. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented slowly at controlled temperatures in stainless steel or traditional large Alsatian foudres, allowing the grape’s natural perfume to shine. The wine is then aged on fine lees to build texture and complexity before bottling, preserving both freshness and the distinct character of the Schoenenbourg terroir.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Gewurztraminer is a superb partner for richly flavoured dishes: think foie gras, creamy pâtés, blue cheeses, spicy Asian cuisine (Thai curries, Szechuan dishes), and aromatic North African or Middle Eastern dishes with dried fruits and nuts. It also complements strong soft cheeses like Munster or washed-rind cheeses beautifully. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C; avoid over-chilling, which can mute its aromatics. Decanting for 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if served within its first few years of aging or if you prefer its more complex, tertiary bouquet.
