Description
Cave de Montagnac’s Mare Nostrum 2023 is a bright, coastal Picpoul de Pinet from the Languedoc, shaped by the maritime influence of the Mediterranean and nearby Thau Lagoon. Its combination of citrus freshness, lively acidity and subtle salinity makes it a particularly natural match for oysters and other shellfish. Picpoul de Pinet is one of southern France’s distinctive white wine styles, prized for its crisp, mineral character.
Tasting Notes
Pale and refreshing in appearance, the wine opens with an expressive nose of citrus, green apple and delicate white flowers. On the palate, it is taut and dry, with vibrant acidity, a distinct mineral edge and a gently saline finish that recalls its Mediterranean origins.
The clean, energetic style is designed for youthful enjoyment, when its freshness and aromatic precision are at their most pronounced. It is best appreciated within the next few years rather than being held for extended cellaring.
Production
The vineyards lie in the Languedoc near the Thau Lagoon and the Mediterranean, where limestone-rich soils and maritime breezes help preserve freshness in the grapes. The Picpoul grapes are gently pressed directly after harvest, followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. A short period of maturation in stainless steel, without oak influence, keeps the wine pure, crisp and focused on its terroir.
Food & Serving
A classic companion to oysters, mussels, prawns and other shellfish, this Picpoul also works beautifully with grilled fish, light salads and Mediterranean dishes. Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Decanting is not necessary; simply open shortly before serving, or pour into a chilled white-wine glass to let its aromas develop.
Producer
Cave de Montagnac is a cooperative based in the Languedoc, close to the Thau Lagoon, working together with local winegrowers to produce fresh, terroir-driven wines. Its location benefits from the region’s limestone soils and strong maritime influence, particularly suited to vibrant Picpoul styles. The cooperative’s approach places emphasis on careful handling, stainless-steel vinification and preserving the grape’s natural freshness and saline character.
